www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday July 14, 2007 - 3 STUDENT EXCELLENCE 2007 Halton District School Board honours Oakville students In May, the Halton District School Board held its 22nd annual Celebration of Student Excellence, a special evening that recognized one student from each of the board's 90 schools. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self-improvement, community work, citizenship and leadership, or other specific criteria that reflects the school's unique priorities. Among the 90 students honoured were 31 from Oakville. This is the first in a series of pages in the Oakville Beaver Weekend edition honouring these students. Oakville Students honoured in the Halton District Catholic School Board's Sharing the Spirit Awards will follow. · Stephanie Schoenhoff, Grade 8, Abbey Lane -- Stephanie was chosen for her exemplary achievement in academics, athletics, student citizenship and demonstration of the Tribes norms. She is known for her thoughtful enquiry and high level of achievement in academics, while also being an enthusiastic participant in volleyball, basketball and track. Stephanie participated in the senior band in Grade 7 and is a member of the student Assembly Leadership team this year. · Sydney Newton, Grade 5, Brantwood -- Sydney is a conscientious student who works hard to achieve her goals and consistently demonstrates a desire and ability to pursue and achieve excellence in everything she does. She is an exceptional athlete in cross country, relay, track and field, volleyball, floor hockey and karate in addition to participating in activities such as JK lunch buddy, knitting club, Grade 5 media representative, student secretary, p.a. announcer, choir, QDF Leader, Silver Birch and Tribe Leader. Sydney portrays outstanding qualities in volunteerism, selfimprovement, citizenship and student leadership. · Mackenzie Blanchett, Grade 8, Brookdale -- Mackenzie has demonstrated outstanding commitment to academics receiving very high honours each term at the intermediate level. She is a highly valued and active member of the Student Parliament, performs in both the school band and drama club, was a key player on the school's provincially recognized Robotics Team and is dedicated to the Y's Youth Leader Corps. Mackenzie embodies Brookdale's best and the school is proud to have her as a representative. · Aunima Bhuiya, Grade 8, Captain R. Wilson -- Aunima is an incredibly hard working and dedicated student. She balExcellence Award. Seane is quick to accept leadership roles within the school and is an excellent role model for her peers and younger students. Seane is always striving to improve herself both inside and outside the classroom. In her spare time, Seane excels at dance and soccer. · Patrick Doyle, Grade 8, E.J. James -- Patrick has demonstrated outstanding skills in the following areas: academics, athletics, citizenship and student leadership. He displays high academic achievement, which is the result of his remarkable and consistent effort to present top quality work. Although Patrick has strong athletic skills and he has been a member of a number of E.J. James' competitive teams, it is his sportsmanship, leadership on the court and coaching of younger students that make him a superb model for his peers. · Boulton Doolittle, Grade 8, Eastview -- Boulton is a consistent honour and E.A.G.L.E. award student who maintains a strong work ethic and continuously strives to achieve excellence in all academic subjects. He has been a member of Eastview's Student Parliament, where his dedication and leadership has led to successful school and community events, while he has also been a member of the school's cross country, volleyball and track and field teams. Boulton's leadership was evident as coach of the Gr. 6 Volleyball team and as a DPA leader, while his greatest strengths are his enthusiasm, respect for others and polite nature. · Alia Tewari, Grade 8 Falgarwood -- Alia is a hard working, well-rounded student who quietly pursues excellence in everything she does, while actively encouraging others to do the same through example and encouragement. She's not only a leader in the classroom, but is also committed to her extra-curricular pursuits as a member of the school's volleyball and basketball teams (she is a captain of the Basketball team) and as a member of Student Council. Alia's positive attitude and commitment to her own growth and learning make her an excellent role model. · Victoria Freeman, Grade 6, Gladys Speers -- Victoria is an enthusiastic and conscientious student who works hard to achieve her goals and do her best. She has shown leadership both in the classroom and around the school as leader of the milk monitors, office helper, morning announcer, Kindergarten helper and member of the Design and Technology team. Victoria is polite, kind and helpful to students and staff, is a team player and a positive role model to others.
