www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 13, 2007 - 37 Chefs face challenge at Organic Farmers' Market Local chefs are putting their reputations on the butchers block at the Kerr Village Organic Farmers' Market's first Chef's Competition on Saturday, July 21. The challenge is to create the winning dishes with ingredients purchased from the market. There will be four chefs involved, each provided with their own cooking station. When the dinner bell rings at 12 noon they will be off and running through the market in search of local, organic ingredients for their culinary masterpieces. They will have 45 minutes to put their skills to the test, creating an appetizer and a dessert. "The competition is intended to be fun for those watching and those participating," said market director Carrie Watson. She's hoping the chance to watch the chefs in action will inspire market shoppers to have fun with the food they're purchasing once they get it home. With the wide variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, meat, cheeses and herbs available at the market, the chefs will be allowed a high degree of creativity. A panel of local celebrity judges will sit down to sample the dishes produced and the winner will be selected based on taste and artistry. The event will wrap up by 1 p.m. The participating chefs will include Peter Wilson from The Rude Native Bistro, Erica Tribulsi from Fish Bones Oyster Bar and Grill, Dale Roossien, all of Oakville, and Chris Haworth from Spencer's At The Waterfront in Burlington. Enjoy folk and' blues music performed by Mo' Kauffey while the chefs are slaving over their burners. Kauffey was been playing for more than 30 years performing a blues style similar to the music featured in the movie Oh Brother Where Art Thou? Live music is a weekly event at the market featuring roots, blues and jazz on stage between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Stay for lunch in the outdoor organic café. The Kerr Village Organic Farmers' Market is in its second month of operation. All farm vendors come from within 150 kilometres of Oakville and follow an organic philosophy -- sustainable, chemical-free, environmentally-sound agriculture. The market runs every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through the end of October at 340 Kerr St. Parking is available on Kerr, with public parking lots off Washington and Florence streets. e! se ook e m wl o C r ne ou Embrace your independence.
