18 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday July 13, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Ten Thousand Villages celebrates their new location! Ten Thousand Villages has moved to a more spacious location, at 226 Lakeshore Rd. E., and is celebrating with a Grand Opening this Saturday, July 14. Located at the former McCutcheon's photo site, it showcase more than 3,000 products, including the latest high style, hand-woven baskets with ceramic bottoms made by Swaziland's Gone Rural women's artisan co-operative, and furniture, made from salvaged, old, castaway or forgotten wood. When the store originally opened in July 2003, throughout the area word soon spread about the wonderful products and difference fair trade makes in the lives of millions. The number of loyal customers and tourists quickly expanded and the shop out grew its small, cozy and bazaar-like atmosphere. Over 30 volunteers, who actively share their passion for fair trade, staff the shop. In April, the store's original manager Ingrid Heinrichs Pauls, accepted the position of public relations and education for Ten Thousand Villages Canada. Frieda Kehler, a former science teacher, Ten Thousand Villages' volunteer and assistant manager, became the store manager. Ten Thousand Villages ensures more than 120 groups in more than 30 countries enable their communities to live a better life by fair payment for the goods they create. "It means that they can pull themselves out of poverty and live a life of dignity," said Frieda. About 70 per cent of these artisans are women. "Financial empowerment for women translates into smaller, healthier families," added Frieda.
