2- The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 29, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Put away the lawn sprinkler for now Halton Region upgraded its water restrictions from voluntary to mandatory, yesterday. Regional officials say the temporary ban on outdoor water uses, such as lawn watering and car washing, is necessary to ensure an adequate supply of water in Halton's reservoirs for fire protection and essential household needs. The unseasonably dry weather, combined with heavy water use, has contributed to the need to enforce a bylaw restricting outdoor watering activity. Residents are to refrain from watering their lawns and washing their cars and driveways. Flower and vegetable gardens are to be watered by hand and only as needed. Recentlylaid sod is exempt from the restrictions. "With the extremely dry weather, and with little rain in the forecast, it has become necessary to impose mandatory water restrictions," said Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr. "It's important that residents comply with these temporary measures to ensure that we have enough water for essential services." The water restriction is applicable across Halton Region, including the municipalities of Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville. Halton Region's Planning and Public Works staff are monitoring the situation closely and will advise residents through the media and Halton's website once the restrictions have been lifted. For water conservation ideas and advice, visit Halton Region's website at www.halton.ca/waterconservation.
