22 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 29, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Artscene Oakville Beaver · FRIDAY, JUNE 29, 2007 Rewind creators have high hopes for short film By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A dysfunctional family adds drugs and guns to the mix in a movie about the power of choice and it all happens in less than 15 minutes. That's the premise of Rewind, a short film shot this past weekend in Oakville by a crew that includes a pair of Abbey Park High School graduates. "This was inspired by sort of the family gone wrong," said Rewind's director and cowriter Lara Azzopardi, while sitting on set at a local home during a break from filming. "It's about a suburban family. In terms of the location and the vibe, it rings Oakville, so why not shoot it here?" Azzopardi, who grew up in Oakville, but now calls Toronto home, wrote Rewind along with Julia Cohen, who she also collaborated with on her first short film, I am an Apartment Building. It screened at various film festivals and picked up the award for Best Canadian Short at the Edmonton International Film Festival. Joining them in co-producing Rewind is Abbey Park grad Molly Merrick. "This is kind of a growing passion of mine to be involved in these kinds of projects," said Merrick, who brings with her more than five years of work in the television and film industry and a background in publicity and promotions. The trio hope to premiere the film at the Sundance Film Festival and show it at various other festivals before it airs on Bravo. Rewind is a drama set in the 1990s and is centered around the Beckett family. A "dream cast" makes up the family, said Azzopardi, including Gemini award winners Martha Burns from Slings and Arrows and H20 II and Tom McCamus of The Sweet Hereafter and The Walter Gretzky Story. They play Heather and Alex Beckett. Adam Butcher plays the son Harrison and Stacey Farber from Degrassi the Next Generation is Georgina, the daughter. From the outside, the director said, "the family looks absolutely perfect and beautiful." "You would never know that there is absolute disaster happening inside." The parents are on the verge of divorce, the father can't find work and the kids are at odds. "This family does love one another, but communication is just out the window," Azzopardi said. That's when drugs and guns enter the picture. "It's either weed or guns that solves the friction," the director said. "Violence and death is staring them right in the face. It's hard to make these people wake up." But drugs, guns and violence isn't what Rewind is about. "It's definitely about the power of choice, but none of our characters know they're See Film page 23 FINAL WEEKEND Open Canada Day! Sunday · 11am - 5pm #1 Sealy Retailer in Canada!
