The local organization, which assists the town's most vulnerable citizens including youth and low-income families, will use the grant to help build a hockey rink. KSM applied for the grant and Giant Canada Day Sale OPEN CANADA DAY (JULY 1st) - CLOSED HOLIDAY MONDAY announced at its summer carnival and barbecue earlier this month that it had been chosen as a recipient, said executive director Ron Shantz. "It'll be a great asset for the kids in the neighbourhood and the youth to be able to play ball hockey and ice hockey if it's cold enough," he said. "A great place to connect in the neighbourhood, and it's constructive energy." The rink will also be used for soccer in the summer. "It'll be a benefit for physical education and exercise," Shantz said. The rink is expected to be built this summer, and should be ready by the fall. The youths at KSM are among more than 100,000 across the country who the Bell Community Sport Fund has assisted since its 2005 inception. It's an annual $1 million fund that invests in community-based sport pro- grams for youths across Canada. The program was launched by Bell Canada in partnership with True Sport. "At Bell we are proud to help Canada's athletes reach the podium, and have learned that Olympic dreams start when young Canadians have more opportunities to play sports in their neighbourhoods," said Renato Discenza, senior vice president of enterprise sales for Bell Canada. "The Bell Community Sport Fund provides the necessary grants to sport organizations, community centres and schools that help young Canadians get involved in local sport programs." Information on submitting applications to the Bell Community Sport Fund can be found at www.truesport.ca/bellfund.
