Students learn swimming survival The Town of Oakville's Aquatic Services is providing lifesaving Swim to Survive lessons to 266 students from five local schools: Mother Teresa Elementary School, Lorne Skuce Public School, Munn's Public School, River Oaks Public School and St. Michael's Elementary School. The program runs during the month of June at White Oaks Pool, with each school receiving three, onehour Swim to Survive lessons and bus transportation. The Swim to Survive program is a Lifesaving Society survival training program developed to teach the minimum skills needed by all Canadians to survive an unexpected fall into deep water. "Drowning is the second-leading cause of accident death in Canada for people 55 years of age and under, many of whom had no intention of going into the water," stated Mary Ellen Maxwell, Manager of Aquatic Services for the Town of Oakville. "That's why it's so important to learn swimming survival skills," she added. The Canadian Swim to Survive Standard involves three steps: 1) Roll into deep water 2) Tread water (1 minute) 3) Swim 50 metres The four Halton municipalities, in partnership with the Halton District School Board and the Halton Catholic District School Board, applied for and received funding to provide this program to 14 elementary schools in Halton Region.
