Today, Stewart's wife, Nancy, and their three other children Graham, 21, Fraser, 16, and Courtney, 18, maintain a vigil at Emily's bedside. "She's moving around a bit and she's reacting to pain," said Courtney in a phone interview from the hospital. "She hasn't woken up yet, but they are keeping her sedated so she can rest." Graham also commented on his sister's condition. "My sister is doing well...she's truly our saving grace right now. She has been reacting to kisses and has been grabbing my mom's hand here and there," he said. Courtney said she is thankful to all the people in the community who have rallied around her family in this difficult time. "The outpouring from the community has been amazing, everyone has been really supportive... they have let us know how much he was loved," she said, fighting back her tears. "He was a fantastic father. I'm going to miss him. He was just a real family guy. He was funny and everyone loved him Emily Stewart so much." To Graham, his father -- who had worked as a Senior Sales Trainer for Metroland Media Group Ltd. before entering private practice -- was larger than life. "My father was the most amazing person in the entire world, and I could not have asked for a better man to help me through everything and see me through to adulthood, assuming I have made it there by now," he said. "He was, is and will forever be my inspiration for everything that I do." Friends and neighbours of the Stewart family are also struggling to come to terms with the tragedy and the realization that so much can vanish in the blink of an eye. "They were all supposed to go away to the Stewart's cottage next weekend," said Karen Hann, whose daughter attends the same Grade 5 River Oaks Public School class as Emily. Local residents are taking the news particularly hard as Stewart is described as a pillar of his community, who frequently volunteered at community events. "Doug was very involved in his kids' activities," said Hann. "He used to be part of the River Oaks Public School Council and he was always in there helping out at the school and doing stuff. Same with his wife, Nancy, she was a Brownie leader and a lot of the girls would go to Brownies with Emily." River Oaks Public School, where all the Stewart children have received their elementary schooling, is similarly devastated by the loss of Stewart and the critical injury to Emily. "I've known Emily for the last four years that I've been a principal here," said River Oaks Principal Alka Sahai. "Emily is one of the most beautiful children you could possibly meet. She's really active in school life. She's a positive role model for her peers, she's definitely a leader within her classroom See Father page 5 Halton Healthcare Services Corporation Looking for Postmenopausal Women If you are: · A healthy naturally or surgically sterile postmenopausal woman · Between 18-71 years of age · A non-smoker who does not regularly take medication · Able to attend visits as listed Please join us at the HHS 2006/07 Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony Thursday, June 21st, 2007 Oakville Conference Centre 2515 Wyecroft Road, Oakville Wine & Cheese Reception 6:00 -- 7:00 p.m. Annual Meeting & Awards Ceremony 7:00 p.m. The accomplishments of Long Service Staff and Physicians will be celebrated.
