The following historical book documents a different topic and era and has been read and reviewed by an Oakville Public Library staff member. The last album: eyes from the ashes of AuschwitzBirkenau, by Ann Weiss So, what would you try to snatch if you were to be suddenly forced from your home by the ultimate disaster; your children, your pets, your family photographs taken? The Nazis attempted to destroy all these and more, burning to ashes even the last fragments of their victims' former lives. This volume contains images selected from a collection of 2,400 personal photographs that had belonged to Jews transported to the notorious death camp. No other such collection is known to have survived. Weiss spent many years researching and interviewing survivors in an attempt to trace the stories behind the photographs. The extent of the Holocaust was so vast that the sheer statistics can numb the mind until you happen to pick up a work such as this. I opened it to a page with a photograph of children playing and realized that one of the children was the very image of my younger sister as a toddler and I suddenly realized this was not the `last' album, but your album; your grandparents smiling happily at their 50th anniversary party; your youngest son beaming on his first day of school; your husband laughing at you as you snapped a picture on your honeymoon.
