The categories were the Arts Award, Group Volunteer Award, History and Heritage Award, Individual Volunteer Award, Senior Award, Sport Development Award and Youth Award. One of the award winners was Joyce Burnell, the Oakville resident who headed efforts to save a 250 year-old white oak tree from being cut down in order to expand Bronte Road. Burnell won the Heritage and History Award for her efforts to save the tree, but the modest 86 year-old is just glad to have retained a piece of Oakville's history for future generations. "The tree needed to saved because of its age, because of its history," said Burnell, who was never seeking an award, but just wanted to preserve the white oak tree. "That's not important to me (winning the award) so much as saving the tree." Everyone in attendance applauded vigorously as Burnell was announced the winner. "Joyce's actions sparked an incredible outburst of charity, talent, sharing, caring, support, love and even controversy," said emcee Hellen Buttigieg. "All the components that make up a great story and great community spirit led to the preservation of this landmark tree and galvanized the Oakville community in this local project." For Burnell, the most rewarding part of saving the tree, besides raising the $343,000 needed to divert the road expansion, was helping to make the community recognize the historic importance of the tree. "I am so happy that a lot of the people who were against saving the tree in the beginning have come around to realize the value," said Burnell. The fight to save the oak garnered international attention including a letter of support from the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles. At the awards ceremony, the Group Volunteer Award was presented to the Oakville Children's Magical Christmas. This annual Christmas event is organized by a group of dedicated volunteers. The celebration is a party for families and children in need from the community. It provides children's entertainment, Christmas crafts, gifts and plenty of festive treats for children who would normally not have the opportunity to experience such an event. "The Oakville Children's Magical Christmas Party can be described as the `little party that grew'," said Buttigieg. "It grew because of a group of dedicated, caring volunteers who provide their time and energies to make Christmas a truly special time for children and families in need. Their only reward is the smiles of joy on the children's faces during the party; as the television commercial says `priceless.'" Winning the award showed just how much work and dedication the volunteers of the Children's Magical Christmas put into helping children in need experience the joys of the holiday season. "Phenomenal, that's all I can say," said Ilona Kopriva, one of the volunteers who accepted on their behalf. "When you work so hard to put something together and you know your doing a great job, it's nice to be recognized. But we don't do it for the recognition. It's something we love, we love children and that's why the event was conceived." This year's awards had two recipients of the Individual Volunteer Award. Liz Benneian was the first recipient of the award. Benneian is one of the co-founders of Ground Breakers, an organization which is responsible for the planting of more than 2,000 trees and bushes. She is an active member of Garden Off Drugs See Their page 32
