www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 15, 2007 - 25 Town of Oakville ready for Smart Commute By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF To show leadership in the fight against traffic congestion, smog and greenhouse gases, the Town of Oakville has launched a Smart Commute program for its staff. In support of this program Mayor Rob Burton, Town Administrative Officer Ray Green and Commissioner of Infrastructure and Transportation Dave Bloomer unveiled six parking spots now dedicated to carpooling, which are located mere steps away from the front doors of Town Hall. "The jury is still out as to how many people will be participating, but we did a survey of the staff and there was a sense that with some appropriate promotion and opportunities there are enough people (interested) to make it worth while," said Bloomer during a small ceremony held Monday. Cindy Toth, director of environmental policy, says even a flirtation with carpooling could make a real difference to the number of cars on the road. "Even if people choose to carpool once a week, it's much better than it is now. It will improve the existing situation and we expect it to become more popular as people become more comfortable with the whole idea of carpooling," she said. "It's more about promoting a behavioural change, getting employees to look at the options they have available to them, whether it be carpooling or using public transit, walking to work or even bicycling. That's all part of the package and carpooling is just one portion." In an effort to promote these other initiatives, Town Hall has also created walking clubs, bicycle lockers and incentives for transit use. Bloomer has hopes that this promotion of carpooling will go far beyond Town Hall. "The Region of Halton took the lead last year, so they've initiated their own program at the Region of Halton Administrative building on Bronte Road. We're joining that and we're hoping that with leadership of the Region and the Town there will be other organizations that might decide it's time to get on the bandwagon," he said. "There are other organizations within Oakville that are large enough that we could form a critical mass and allow us to create, ultimately, a Traffic Management Association." With the launching of its Smart Commute program, Oakville Town Hall joins not only Halton Region, but Transport Canada, the Regional Municipalities of Durham, Peel, York, the City of Mississauga, City of Hamilton and the City of Toronto in Canada's largest ever transportation-demand reduction program. The program's mission is to reduce traffic congestion, smog and greenhouse gas emissions and their related costs to the community, economy and environment by helping employers explore different commuter choices. 2007 VOLVO XC70 % $ * 1 559 LEASE PER MO.
