www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 15, 2007 - 23 Peace Centre to close After 15 years of spreading environmental activism in Oakville the doors of the Oakville Community Centre For Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR) are closing forever as of Wednesday, June 27. Members have cited financial reasons for closure noting there was not enough resources available to rent the office and maintain big annual events like the Earth Week Clean Up, Halton Eco Festival and the Oakville Peace Concert. "Something had to give. It was the office that was deemed too expensive to retain and that the campaigns are of too great a benefit to the community to lose," wrote the OCCPEHR Board of Directors and staff in an e-mail to The Oakville Beaver. The OCCPEHR is appealing to anyone who has information about where it can find free or cheap office space. Despite nearing homelessness, the OCCPEHR has no intention of letting up on its environmental mission with global warming emerging as a primary focus. In a round about way the loss of its office only furthers its fight against this issue which has become the hot topic for almost every major Canadian politician. "As we further thought about it, we began to consider how our own organization could lessen its contributions to the problem of global warming," said the OCCPEHR. "We concluded that our office space was our biggest contributor to global warming (heating, lighting, commuting) and that it is not absolutely necessary particularly when the office space is not being utilized to its maximum capacity. To reduce emissions, we can learn to organize effectively from our homes and via the Internet." The storefront office, located at the corner of Kerr and Rebecca, has been the headquarters of the OCCPEHR since 1992 from where it began making a mark on the community. In April of 1992, OCCPEHR organized a clean up at Bronte Creek and along the QEW removing a huge amount of garbage through the efforts of just 30 volunteers. Since then, the phenomenon has grown to the point where the most recent Earth Week Clean Up in April involved 47,000 citizens and students clearing away more than 78,000kg of litter. In Oakville 1,100 volunteers cleaned up 30 nature sites with 4,000 students also participating. In 2001 the OCCPEHR organized the Oakville Eco Festival to encourage local people to participate in green organizations and businesses. The festival has since grown across the Halton Region and the GTA to the point where 2,500 people participated in 2006. Next year's events remain on schedule with the Earth Week Clean Up set for Saturday, April 19, 2008 while the Eco Festival will be held Sunday, April 20, 2008. OCCPEHR invites the public to a final celebration at the 148 Kerr St. centre on Wednesday, June 27 at 7 p.m. Anyone with information about office space rental is asked to call 905-849-5501. www.dealsonmealsauction.com The Greatest Local Dining Auction Event ever in on NOW!
