www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 8, 2007 - 49 OT stifled by stingy Notre Dame squad in AAAA championship Continued from page 48 St. Thomas Aquinas 4-0 in the semifinals. Irish blanks Devils in senior AAAA final Playing a team coming off a bronze-medal showing at OFSAA , the Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils knew they had their work cut out in the senior girls' AAAA final. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish had lost just once all season -- in Wednesday's provincial semifinal -- and although it had an OFSAA medal, it still had a run of six straight Halton titles to keep alive, which it did with a 2-0 victory. Although OT pressured the Irish early, Notre Dame proved to be as stingy as it had been all year, a season in which it allowed just five goals in 14 games. Sierra Pearson would provide OT with its best chance in the early going. She worked the ball around the sliding Irish Emily Maganja, the Titans' team MVP this year, scored two goals, both in the first half. The winner came off the foot of Karly Dagys, who also scored twice, midway through the second half. Holy Trinity's last score was a back-breaker, as Shelby Coulson's shot slipped through the hands of the Irish goalie and rolled just over the line. Holy Trinity finished the season 9-0, which includes a 1-0 semifinal win over Appleby Park. Notre Dame was 7-1-1 with Thursday's loss. It knocked off goalie and unleashed a hard kick towards the open net, but a Notre Dame defender hustled back to send it wide. "It could have changed the game," said OT coach Jeff Gruber. "They might have had to play differently if we had the lead." Diana Colarossi scored late in the first half to give the Irish a 1-0 lead, and Notre Dame later added an insurance marker on a second-half corner kick. The Red Devils will lose seven graduating players. Gruber was happy to see his grads in the final. "We have four or five girls who have been on the team for three years so it was good for them to have a chance to play for the championship," he said. -- Stories by Jon Kuiperij, Kevin Nagel and Herb Garbutt PAUL SZOSTAK Sales Representative stakteam@yahoo.com 1-866-623-7773 Always look for the ASP Logo Escarpment Realty Inc., Brokerage Independently Owned & Operated TORONTO STAR "Bogey Man" GOLF+DINE (after 4:30 pm) (after 3:00 pm) Sales Representatives Accredited Staging Professionals (ASP) 2006 2006 2006 2006 TOP 5% IN CANADA FOR ROYAL LEPAGE OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY 2-4 P.M.
