38 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 8, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Artscene Oakville Beaver · FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2007 38 Oakville Club celebrates 100 with Cabaret By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER I t is a rare occasion for a club to be able to celebrate 100 years of existence, but one such club recently had that honour and made it count with songs, costumes and even a streaker. Last week saw the historic Oakville Club hold its centennial celebration in the form of a Cabaret show that took the audience on a trip through the years with musical numbers and dances. The Cabaret, Once in 100 Years, was staged entirely by club members. Co-directors Cathe Cochren and Gillian Cockcroft had been working on the Cabaret for the last two years, preparing the script and making sure everything was up to standard. "The club has been planning this for quite a while, " said Pearl Lande, co-chair of the 100th Anniversary Committee for the Oakville Club. "Our two directors worked hard on it for two years. Rehearsals started three months before the show." Those performing in the Cabaret were at the top of their form thanks to the help of Diane Daymond and Bill Sharp. Having trained with the Oakville School of Dance for the last decade, Daymond used her expertise to craft the volunteers into a group of professional dancers, capable of entertaining the audience. "Sometimes people are too involved in their area, but the production brought them all together." Sharp, who has been singing in choral groups for decades, worked as the chorus director and made sure all the vocalists were at their best. The Cabaret helped to establish new connections between members who may not have interacted much in the past. "Our Cabaret was wonderful in that it brought together members of all ages and from the various areas of the club, like fitness, sailing and badminton," said Lande. "Sometimes people are too involved in their area, but the production brought them all together." The show ran for three consecutive nights, beginning on May 31 and running until June 2, with the performances sold out every night. "Every night the crowd was so excited," said Lande. "They were are so happy, and they were clapping and just really enjoying the show." The performances marked the first time that the Oakville Club put on a Cabaret since 1997, but earlier in the club's history, the cabaret show was a yearly tradition.
