www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 8, 2007 - 21 Wheels in Motion downtown Sunday Participants at this year's fifth annual Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion event Sunday will be supporting the development of Oakville's first accessible boating dock facility. The annual walk will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday from the Burloak Canoe Club and wind its way through downtown. It will raise funds for an accessible dock at Oakville Harbour to allow people with spinal cord injuries and other disabilities, as well as children and seniors, to participate in boating activities at Oakville's harbour. "An accessible dock will benefit all of the people in our community," said Stephen Cull, Oakville's Wheels In Motion event leader. "This project will transform the urban wasteland area under the Rebecca Street Bridge into a waterfront dock and park that welcomes people of all ages and abilities. Nothing like this has ever been built in Canada." CharterAbility, Wau Nui O Kanaka Outrigger Canoe Club, and the Town of Oakville are working together under the banner of the Partners for Accessible Recreational Docking (PARDNERS) to raise the $65,000 required to build the dock. The project is designed to promote healthy activity for people of all abilities and will provide amenities that are accessible to all boaters, including washrooms and picnic tables. "This worthy project will allow everyone in the community to enjoy Oakville's wonderful waterways," said Bill Crook, Executive Director of Wheels In Motion. "Accessible docking benefits so many people and is an example of how everyone in the community can come together to make a difference." Rick Hansen Wheels In Motion is an annual event held in communities across Canada. Each June, thousands of people wheel, walk or run to raise funds that improve the quality of life of people with spinal cord injuries and for research leading to a cure. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Man In Motion World Tour and over 20 years of dreams in motion. Twenty years ago, Rick Hansen wheeled around the world, fuelled by the dream of a fully accessible and inclusive society, and a cure for spinal cord injury. His legendary Man In Motion World Tour spanned more than 40,000 km through 34 countries, took over two years to complete, and raised $26 million for spinal cord injury research. Oakville residents are invited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Man In Motion World Tour by participating at the Wheels In Motion event Sunday. Jeff Gareau, Chair of Media Relations and Community Development, emphasizes this event is for the whole family with clowns, live band, and many free food items and services. The Rick Hansen Foundation is a charitable organization that works to create more accessible and inclusive communities for people with a spinal cord injury and supports the search for a cure. The Foundation has generated more than $178 million for spinal cord injury related programs and initiatives.
