www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday June 6, 2007 - 5 Elderly woman pulled from smoke-filled apartment One person was taken to the hospital with lifethreatening injuries following a fire in a Kerr Street seniors complex late Tuesday afternoon. Platoon Chief Dan Stacey, of the Oakville Fire Department, said firefighters removed an elderly woman from a smoke-filled unit at 271 Kerr St. The unconscious woman was transported to Oakville Trafalgar Hospital after efforts by emergency services personnel failed to to revive her at the fire scene, said Stacey. The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called to investigate. Stacey said the fire department received a call at 4:50 p.m. from a neighbour at the apartment building, who was alerted by an alarm from a smoke detector. Firefighters confined the fire to the victim's unit. Brother says sister went limp in his arms Continued from page 4 George told the jury was temporary because he "wanted his own space." A tall, slight man, who stands about six-feet tall with dark hair, George stood up several times yesterday to show the jury exactly how the fight went. He testified Helen first came at him with a decorative marble apple, which grazed his head. "We were struggling and at that point we both fell," he said. "She ended up hitting her nose on the floor." Helen had anemia, he testified, "so she bleeds very easily," and started bleeding from her nose. Then, he told the court, Helen reached for the knives. "She was growling, as in angry growling," George testified. "I tried to grab her arms so she didn't get the knives." Again, standing, George showed the court how he put his left arm around her torso, and his right arm around her "upper neck area." "I kept telling her she should stop it, stop, stop." After holding Helen in that position "less than 30 seconds," George said, "she just went limp." He talked to his other sister Anastasia that night but George said he didn't tell her because she was pregnant and he "didn't want to worry her" As for why he never called any friends to tell them, George said, "It was more of a family issue." "I know it was wrong, but I just, my head wasn't thinking clearly." His older sister, Anastasia Stevenson is expected to testify today. The trial continues before Justice John Sproat.
