18 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 2, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Fundraiser aims to help orphans By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF They're not asking you to save all of Africa, just one orphanage. Linda Joakim and Sandra McAughey of Oakville are holding a fundraiser Friday, June 8, at the Oakville Club, the proceeds from which will go towards helping the children of the Tsungirirai Orphanage. The orphanage located in Harare, Zimbabwe looks after 105 orphans between the ages of four and 15 who have lost their parents to the country's AIDS epidemic. The orphans of Tsungirirai first became known to Joakim through her sister in-law, Tara Pratt, who worked in Africa for a year and became involved with the orphanage as a teacher. Knowing that Joakim's husband coached a soccer team, the Oakville Golden Lions, Pratt asked if they could donate uniforms for the orphans. Joakim did, collecting the uniforms from a small group of teens within the division and sending soccer equipment to the orphans for the last five years. "One year we sent them uniforms and they sent us a picture of themselves with their feet in the air. They needed shoes so the next year we sent them shoes," she said. For this fundraiser however, the stakes are much higher. "What we're running the fundraiser for this time is not for soccer equipment. Now we're finding that the orphanage really needs food," said Joakim. "They really need money for food, just for their monthly food bills. They're not being able to cover them." In hopes of meeting this need Joakim and McAughey are hosting a fun-filled evening that will include dancing, drinks, draws, raffles, door prizes and more. Prizes include a Nintendo Wii and a pearl necklace, donated to this function by Laurie McLachlan Jewellery. The help of the community is desperately needed as so far Joakim is well short of her goal of selling 250 tickets. The party starts at 8 p.m. at the Oakville Club, located at 56 Water St. Tickets are $30 per person and can be obtained by calling 905-827-0187 or by emailing Joakim at l.joakim@sympatico.ca.
