www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 1, 2007 - 7 Relay for Life is a celebration of survival By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Tonight is the night Relay for Life takes place in Oakville. Thousands of residents will head to Appleby College at dinner hour to spend the night celebrating cancer survivors, remembering victims and raising funds to beat cancer. Since cancer never sleeps, neither will hundreds of residents who, in teams of 10, will spend the night circling the track of the Lakeshore Road private school in the sixth annual edition of the Oakville Relay. It's an event that promises not to leave a dry eye in the house with its poignancy yet will leave the memory of an upbeat, good time as teams dress up, enjoy good music and good company to make the event a celebration. Last year the event raised more than half a million dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit and that's cause to celebrate. Relay participants will be able to drop off their tents anytime after 10 a.m. today at Appleby and then later catch a shuttle to Appleby from either Coronation Park on Lakeshore Road West or T. A. Blakelock High School on Rebecca Street. Registration opens on the grounds at 4 p.m. and activities will get underway at 5 p.m. That will include a Survivors' Reception, entertainment on the Main Stage, the opening of a new Relay Marketplace/Midway, a silent auction, Relay Retail and food services provided by Longo's. On the Main Stage will be The Superficials, The Justin Time Band and a Lululemon Yoga Warm Up just before relay kicks off. Opening ceremonies will begin at 7 p.m. and the symbolic Survivors' Victory Lap will begin at 7:15 p.m. as the Halton Regional Police Pipe Band performs. By 7:40 p.m., relay teams will hit the track and Canada's Singing Cowboy will take to the Main Stage. Judging for team awards will begin at 8 p.m. and take place for nearly two hours. A luminary ceremony is set for 10 p.m. until 10:40 p.m. Late Night Chillin' with The Wave 94.7 FM will begin on the Wave patio for the top five fundraising teams at 11:30 p.m. and at 12:30 a.m., the Relay will go Hollywood as a Hollywood theme lap is held and prizes handed out for best-dressed teams. By 1 a.m. the Main Stage will close after seeing performances through the evening by the Alex Fournier Jazz Band, Space is For Stars, The Last Minute Band and Late Night Chillin' with the Wave featuring the Clayton/Scott Group. Through the evening in the Appleby Chapel, there will be performances by Corrine and Bernie Lynch, Stephanie Domingues and Susan Mander Powell, the Appleby Chamber Choir, Oakville Chamber Orchestra, and Dusty Bohan and friends. The new Relay Marketplace will feature Ad Lib, buskers Erik Campbell and Raquel Loglisci, cards by Liz's Bosom Buddies, Golf Swing analysis by Nick Starchuk, Henna for Hope, Monique Wood, Pinegrove Public School jugglers, PlayStation, Sheridan College face painters, Sid's Kids, Sneezy the Clown and Xbox. As teams circle the track through the night, a wake-up call will be heard through Tent City at 5:30 a.m. and closing ceremonies will take place from 6:30-7 a.m. Saturday. Relay for Life is one of the prime fundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society, Oakville Unit and is supported by residents, businesses and just about everyone else in town. This year's major sponsors include: Scotiabank (Event Sponsor), AGF Funds (Survivor Sponsor), Appleby College (Site Sponsor), The Oakville Beaver (Print Media Sponsor), Wave 94.7 FM (Radio Media Sponsor) and Longo's (Food Sponsor). The Oakville Relay for Life is a community celebration of survival -- a tribute to the lives of loved ones and a night of fun, friendship and fundraising to beat cancer. There's still time to register a team or purchase a luminary.
