www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 25, 2007 - 15 Y the only choice in eyes of Ironman hopeful M egan Hanna tells us that she was brought up with the Y, has always been a member of the Y family, and so she will really miss it when she moves out west next month to a community that doesn't have a YMCA. Megan and her family have traveled the world as transfers followed one after another in her husband's career. After three and a half years in Oakville, they have been moved once again this time back to their hometown, Vancouver. Megan has remained in Oakville a bit longer, so that their son can complete graduate from Grade 12 with his friends. Some would see this delay as an annoyance, but Megan has used it as a great opportunity and we're sure she won't mind if we let you into a little secret. For her 50th birthday present to herself this year, she has been training hard at the YMCA of Oakville in order to participate in and complete The Canadian Ironman Competition. This event takes place in August, in British Columbia. To finish the course, competitors must complete a 3.8 km swim, followed by a 108 km bicycle race and cap that off by immediately running a full, 42.2 km marathon! Not for the faint of heart. But Megan is well into her training here in Oakville and has been spending much time in the Y's pool, the weight room and using the wellness centre to monitor her progress. There has been a YMCA in many of the communities in which Megan and her family have found themselves over the years and she has always turned to the Y over the choice of private clubs or municipal facilities. "It's always been the Y for me," says Megan. "There simply isn't a choice when you consider all the facilities and programs available under one roof all day and every day -- when compared with the limited hours and options at the alternatives." As her way of saying "Thank you and goodbye" to the YMCA of Oakville, Megan recently quietly dropped off a donation at the front desk to the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign. Thank you, Megan, for your donation, but even more important, thank you for your dedication to the YMCA. Good luck In the Ironman!" -- Submitted by the Oakville YMCA.
