Walk to Cure Diabetes personal for Oakville mother By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER For adults afflicted with diabetes, life can be difficult enough. But for a young child, a life filled with daily needle pricks and constant care can almost put childhood on hold. Last September, Oakville resident Cristin Walsh was shocked when she heard the news that her 13-month old daughter, Elianna, had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. "It does not run in our family," said Walsh. "We were shocked we when found out. She has had it pretty rough the last eight months." With Elianna requiring two injections, blood sugar checks and close monitoring every day, Walsh felt compelled to act, deciding to somehow contribute to the fight towards finding a cure for diabetes. She decided to take part in the Walk to Cure Diabetes, a fundraising event that will be taking place June 10, at McMaster Hospital in Hamilton. Before taking part in the walk, however, Walsh is committed to raising a pledge of $5,000. In order to raise the money, Walsh has organized two separate fundraisers in May and June. On May 26, a street-wide rummage sale will be taking place on Garthdale Court. Friends and community members donated items for the sale, which will be hosted by Wave 94.7FM, who will be broadcasting live from the sale all day. It will begin at 8 a.m., and will continue for as long as is necessary. The other event that will be taking place is a poker night dinner. For $85 per ticket, people will receive a meal and entry into a Texas Hold'Em tournament. The night will also play host to an auction. The dinner and tournament will be occurring at the Knights of Columbus Hall, at 1494 Wallace Rd. It was organized with the help of Dragon Fundraising, a company based out of Oakville that specializes in managing fundraising events. A large group of local businesses has also sponsored both events, they include Amazing Results Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, Sales Resource Group, Neat Spaces Professional Organizing Service, It's A Girl Thing Birthday Parties, Lakeview Cellars Estate Winery, Wellness for the Body Massage Therapy and Healing Centre, Lee-Ann's Organized Events, MVW Contracting, Solo Kids, The Niblick Pub, Home Depot, Colour Addiction Salon and Remember That Chef. On June 8, at the Niblick Pub, a celebration will be taking place in honour of the fundraising events. People who decide to attend are being asked to bring out their pocket change for donation. At the end of the night, the final amount of money raised will be revealed. Although both events have yet to occur, Walsh is pleased with the initial reaction of the community and with the amount of dedication being shown towards raising funds for researching a cure for diabetes, she is optimistic that her daughter will be cured one day. "The community has really stepped forward," said Walsh. "And they [the medical community] are getting closer to finding a cure, and I think they will find one within her lifetime. She is so young that by the time she is in her teens I hope there will be cure." Anyone wishing to sponsor the events or purchase tickets for the dinner is asked to contact Walsh at 905-842-1807 or via email at cure4elianna@gmail.com. OAKVILLE - Celebrating 150 years!
