www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 16, 2007 - 7 Downtown celebrates May 27 Downtown Oakville and its historic harbour may be a jewel in the crown of Oakville, but how many residents really know the history? There's no better time to find out than this year, which is the Town's 150th anniversary and many areas of town have planned special celebrations to take place on Sunday, May 27 the town's actual incorporation date 150 years ago. The Ward 3 -- which includes Downtown Oakville -- will host an anniversary party on Sunday May 27. It will start at 1:30 p.m. in the Towne Square on Lakeshore Road and continue at Lakeside Park near historic Erchless Estate at Oakville Museum. There will be a parade, food, music, games, and commemorative tree planting. The Downtown Oakville BIA is sponsoring the Halton Regional Police Pipe and Drum Band "Celtic Connection" from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Towne Square. Many downtown businesses will be displaying pictures of Oakville's beginnings, courtesy of the Oakville Historical Society. For example, in 1835 The Medical Hall at 182 Lakeshore Rd. E., now home to the To Set a Table shop, was once a pharmacy and medical practice for over 98 years. Erchless Estate was the family home of Oakville founder Col. William Chisholm. All anniversary celebrations for Downtown Oakville will occur on Oakville's incorporation date of (Sunday) May 27. For information about the downtown celebration visit www.oakvilledowntown.com. Second suspect believed to be here Continued from page 1 The deceased, who has been identified as Tiffany Bottenfield of Welland, was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital where she died shortly before 11 p.m. on Monday. Immediately after the incident the Lexus fled the scene and was later found by police abandoned about two blocks away from where the fatal collision took place. Niagara Police traced two suspects to the Town of Oakville where, with the help of the Halton Regional Police Service, they located and arrested one of them the same evening of the hit and run. Giuseppe Gandolfo, 20, of Oakville has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder in relation to the incident. Police allege Gandolfo was driving the SUV, which police have also determined to have been stolen, at the time of the collision. Police are continuing their search for the second suspect whose identity is currently unknown. However, it is believed the second suspect may go by the first name Chris and/or the street nickname `Smiles.' He is also believed to be in the Oakville area. The second suspect is described by police as being a white male, 17 to 20-yearsold. He is described as being between 6-foot and 6-foot-1, with a lean build, and short, straight light-brown hair. Police said he was wearing a grey hooded zippered sweatshirt, white t-shirt with logo `G-Unit' on the front, baggy blue jeans, yellow construction style boots and a white baseball hat. Anyone with information on this incident should contact the Niagara Regional Police Service at 905-688-4111, ext. 4200 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222TIPS. SERVICE EXCELLENCE DODGE RAM 1500 QUAD CAB AWARD WINNER ONTARIO'S #1 RANKED CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP JEEP PATRIOT DODGE CALIBER DODGE GRAND CARAVAN DODGE CHARGER Benefits are limited DODGE NITRO Continued from page 6 In my view, the capital itself should have been put towards increasing the total number of ice surfaces in the community, which this does not do, and direct subsidies should have been used in the interim to address the timing concern. With respect to the Mayor's point (Mayor responds, Oakville Beaver, May 11) that the purchase will give the Town the ability to charge higher development charges in the future, this is a clever strategic step. The benefits, however, are limited and in the future. Development charge legislation is subject to change. Current residents are funding these growth costs now and with their taxes, with little genuine improvement in access to facilities. Some would seriously question the wisdom of such transactions when the objective is to get growth costs off the backs of the current taxpayers.
