His father was born in Adelaide, making him eligible to play for the Aussies. But there was one major obstacle -- how would he get there for tryouts? "At first, I couldn't believe it. Then I thought, `We'll see if it happens,'" the 18-year-old rookie with the Oakville Buzz said. As it turned out, there would be no tryouts and Hristopoulos and his cousin Harrison joined the team after it arrived in Canada for a series of exhibition games leading up to the worlds. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said Harrison, whose father moved to Canada at the age of 13. "We might get a chance to play again in four years, but you never know. We couldn't pass it up." Oakville's Dylan MacDougall was also slated to play for the Australian squad but broke his hand while playing for the Burlington junior A Chiefs. MacDougall's father, Rob, is an assistant coach with the Australian team at the worlds, which began Monday in Halifax. Other locals participating include former Buzz player Justin Wilson-Kirby (Scotland) and National Lacrosse LIESA KORTMANN / OAKVILLE BEAVER See Strange page 31 OMBA OPENER: White Sox player Daniel Rampino takes a mighty cut Saturday during Oakville Minor Baseball Association (OMBA) house league t-ball play at Brookdale Park.
