HAL SETS NEW STANDARDS When Holland America Line's Zaandam sailed from Vancouver on Earth Day (April 22), it was unlike any other cruise ship at sea following a two week dry dock stay, the ship was outfitted with new cutting-edge emission reduction technology. In co-operation with several United States and Canadian government and regulatory agencies, Holland America has launched a technology demonstration project, designed to show the feasibility of using sea water to "scrub," or reduce, engine emissions on oceangoing vessels. Modifications of the ship's new test emissions technology could dramatically change not only the cruise industry, but the entire maritime industry by reducing ship engine emissions. The sea water scrubber system, developed by Krystallon, a subsidiary of BP, uses the natural chemistry of sea water to remove virtually all sulfur oxide, as well as significantly reducing particulate matter emissions. The sea water is then treated to remove harmful components, while the calcium carbonate in sea water renders the sulfur oxides harmless by conversions to sulfates and neutral salts. The price tag tops more than US$1.5-million and includes assistance of US$300,000 from an Environments Protection Agency (EPA)/West Coast Collaborative grant and a US$100,000 contribution from Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. Additional support for the project comes from the Port of Seattle, the Port of Vancouver, Environment Canada, British Columbia Ministry of the Environment and the BC Clean Air Research Fund, as well as Krystallon. In fact just last week a colleague and I were talking about all the different things you can learn on a cruise these days. She even fessed up that she took a course on how to fold dinner napkins. I haven't taken that course, but I did take some dance classes. This is a new idea, a cruise that is all about you. Almost everyone I talk to is talking about the movie The Secret and now there is a cruise that will help motivate you. Canadian Bob Proctor, who has become even more famous since his role in the movie The Secret, is inviting everyone on this Mexican Riviera cruise that he says will change your life. I think we could all do with a little motivation in our lives. Frankly, the idea of learning how to improve my life while looking at the ocean sounds great to me, and this is a cruise I'd love to be on. Not only does this cruise offer opportunities for you to grow personally and professionally, but you can bring the kids. There is also a special children's program. The Secret is a book and movie that teaches the Law of Attraction. That law basically states that what you give out, you will get back. You attract into your life, what you think about -- negative thoughts, negative results; positive thoughts, positive results. Proctor is the author of You Were Born Rich, and has recently appeared on Larry King Live and The Ellen DeGeneres show. The Secret has also twice been the topic on Oprah Winfrey's show. Proctor has leased the HMS Oosterdam from Holland America for the seven-day cruise that leaves from San Diego with stops at the Mexican ports of Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta. All-inclusive prices start at $1,338 US, each of two, with gratuities for dining and room service included. That doesn't include air. The cruise is Oct. 6 - 12. I like the port stops as well. Cabo San Lucas has the most beautiful scenery I think I've ever seen and great golf courses close. When you see the prices on this upscale destination you'll be glad you're eating and sleeping on the ship. Mazatlan, is a lovely city, famous for seafood, at great prices. Their malacon (boardwalk) is a must and along the way you can see the cliff divers performing. Puerto Vallarta has always been a favourite of mine. During the days at sea there will be seminars and panel discussions on a variety of topics. You can learn how to become a better public speaker, how to publish your own book and even take a crash course on how to play the stock market. Proctor's company is also offering a secret agent course for children and teens. The kids will have an opportunity to attend mini-seminars by children's experts on topics including book writing and goal setting. For entrepreneurs, or wanna-be entrepreneurs, "There will also be mastermind meetings taking place, all designed to help take your business to another level," says Proctor. The speakers include: · Bob Proctor The Secret and The Law of Attraction; · Gerry Robert publishing your own book; · Michael Beckwith The Secret; · Mary Morrissey The Law of Attraction; · Doug Wead former senior advisor to a U.S. president will talk about the power of working together in a presentation; · Steve Siebold mastering public speaking; · Paul Martinelli building your own business; · David Shirmer how to be successful on the stock market. There will be a schedule of all the programs taking place so you can pick and choose which sessions to attend. Each program will be held at a few different times. If you are involved with one meeting at the same time that another of your choices is taking place, you will be able to see the second event at another scheduled time. "We'll be putting together networking events that are a far cry from a cocktail and a hand shake in a stuffy room," says Proctor. "Imagine all the new friends and connections that are to be made in this relaxed and exciting atmosphere." Proctor's company is using a Canadian company based out of Vancouver (Cantrav Services) to handle reservations for the cruise.
