www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 11, 2007 - 13 Child and Youth Services undergoes ROCK-in name change The name may have changed, but Halton Child and Youth Services' dedication to helping children struggling with mental illnesses is stronger than ever. Last Tuesday, Halton Child and Youth Services, the largest children's mental health centre in Halton, announced it was changing its name to Reach Out Centre for Kids or ROCK. "While our name and visual identity are different, one thing that will not change is our commitment to delivering high quality programs and services to help infants, children, teens and adults who have, or are at risk of developing mental health problems," said Ron Rodgers, Executive Director of ROCK. "We want to ensure the community that they will continue to receive the same level of compassionate and professional service delivery that they have always received from our highly qualified and dedicated staff." The name change comes as part of a new campaign by ROCK to increase its visibility and draw attention to the plight of the mentally ill after community consultations revealed a desire by stakeholders to see more action from the organization. "In delivering care to our most valued citizens -- our children -- we understand the importance of advocating on their behalf. However, these results tell us that we must, in carrying out our mandate, enhance awareness of the issues these children are struggling withand the courage they display in overcoming significant challenges on a daily basis," said Rodgers. This new approach comes at a perfect time as Children's Mental Health Week, which runs from May 7 to May 13, has only just begun. Michael Kingston, chair of the board of directors for ROCK, said this period of change would also see ROCK pioneering new methods to deal with the problem of ever shrinking resources, which is chronic in Halton's social services sector. This need for help is extensive as statistics provided by ROCK point out that one in five children in Ontario struggle with a diagnosable emotional, mental or behavioral disorder. ROCK also says that in the Halton region there are 6,000 young people, from infants to 19-year-olds, receiving some form of mental health service. The most common mental illnesses among Canadian children between the ages of 4 and 17 are anxiety disorders, depression, conduct disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, eating disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Despite the prevalence of these mental disorders among Ontario's children many do not receive mental health care with 7,000 children across the province stuck on waiting lists, a number which has tripled over the last 10 years. oakville other's M M D ay TH SATURDAY MAY 12TH 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Plus!
