24 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 9, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Understanding Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is widely thought to be an inevitable part of aging, especially in women. In order to dispel this myth it is vital that Oakvillians realize the complexity of this disease. Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and the deterioration of bone tissue. Overtime, bones will become increasingly fragile with a high risk of fracture. This disease has earned the nickname "silent thief", as it strikes without symptoms, and usually isn't diagnosed until a fracture occurs. Approximately 1.4 million Canadians suffer with this debilitating disease and while it is true that a high percentage of suffers are women over 50, osteoporosis can strike either men or women at any age.The exact cause of this disease is yet to be discovered, however there are several major risk factors including early menopause, family history, and vertebral compression fracture. Minor risk factors include rheumatoid arthritis, excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, smoking, and low calcium intake. As with many such diseases, the best defense is early prevention. By starting to properly care for your bones in your youth and early adulthood you are decreasing your chances of developing her Health problems in the future. You can strengthen your bones and increase your overall health by eating a well balanced diet, rich in nutrients. Following Canada's Food Guide is an excellent way to ensure a proper diet. Calcium is vital to building bone strength. Ninety nine percent of your body's calcium is actually stored in your bones. A calcium-rich diet requires 2-4 servings of dairy each day- this means eating and drinking lots of milk, cheese, and yogurt. Vitamin D is just as important as calcium when it comes to maintaining your bones. Vitamin D assists the body in absorbing calcium. Exposure to sunlight prompts our bodies to produce its own vitamin D, but it can also be found in foods such as milk, and oily fish (salmon and sardines). Exercise will also help to keep your bones their strongest. You should aim at about 30 minutes of physical activity each day for best results. Your bones are important, and require proper care. Treat your body right and start working towards a brighter future for your bones- they'll thank you for it.
