www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 4, 2007 - 7 Steel home will be built in 48 hours By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER For those building a new house, the thought of having the whole thing built -- from start to finish -- in a mere 48 hours seems like more of a dream than a plausible expectation. But it is now one dream that will come true, as Oakville will be the site of a new invention by TMCP Building Systems Inc. known as the 48 hour Green Home. Construction will begin Monday at the Kaneff Development, located in Upper Glen Abbey. "We want to prove to the world that an upscale house can be put together in 48 hours," said Ernie Bodnar, President of TCMP, and inventor of the technology being used in the construction. "I've being doing this sort of thing for 20 years, and now I want to share it with the world." The frame of the house will be constructed at a factory and the pieces will be transported to the building site, where it will all be assembled like a large puzzle. Assembling the house only requires a crane and five people to bolt the frame together. The house being constructed can easily be considered one of the most environmentally-friendly construction projects currently out there. On account of the speed of construction, the amount of energy expanded during the building process is considerably less than a standard home. The technology used for the construction of the home is called ThermAlloy Paneling. It is a thin-shell composite concrete and steel-load bearing panel. Recycled steel is used in the panel, and 30 percent less material is required in production compared to standard techniques. The total amount of recycled steel used in construction will be scrap material from two old cars. When construction is complete, the materials used for the house will have made it thermally efficient beyond current standards. "The house is very environmentally friendly," said Bodnar. "It is the most thermally-efficient home on the market." When completed, the house will not require insulation, and the heating system will already be built into the "We want to prove to the world that an upscale house can be put together in 48 hours." Ernie Bodnar, TCMP president house. Outside of Oakville, this style of construction has the potential to benefit communities all across the globe. Using his technique, Bodnar and his company constructed a clinic for a remote community in Indonesia in only a week. "We made everything on site," said Bodnar. "A group of 10 to 12 people constructed the clinic from nothing. Hundreds of people watched in amazement while this clinic was being built in only a week." Bodnar also hopes his technology will help alleviate housing issues in devastated areas -- such as regions affected by the 2004 tsunami -- by mass-producing quality homes. Homes using the ThermAlloy Panels have a higher fire rating than normally constructed homes, and are earthquake and hurricane proof. The steel frame is twice as strong as the average frame. Construction for the Oakville home will occur over the period of six days, with the crew working eight hours a day. The public is invited to come out and watch as the house is constructed, and see for themselves how quickly progress is made. When asked about his thoughts on his new construction technique, Bodnar is proud of his accomplishment. "I believe that I have achieved what I set out to accomplish." SERVICE EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNER ONTARIO'S #1 RANKED CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP Free compost give-away May 12 The Region is helping local residents once again make their gardens beautiful with its annual Spring Compost Give-Away. From Monday to May 12, residents can get up to seven bags of free compost from the Halton Waste Management Site between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring along a donation of a non-perishable food item for local food banks. Cash donations will also be accepted in lieu of food contributions. Participants must bring their own bags or containers and a shovel in order to bag their own compost. The Halton Waste Management Site is at 5400 Reg. Rd. 25, Milton. Creative solutions needed Continued from page 6 resent a marginal improvement in any case. For adult hockey players, who were forced off Town ice when the Town addressed its long-standing failure to provide enough capacity by instituting a "youth first" policy, it remains to be seen whether this will be a positive development. (If purchasing this facility doesn't mean more ice for kids, then it really does defy explanation.) Oakville has an ice shortage: creative solutions are needed, public-private partnerships cannot be dismissed. Above all, taxpayer money should be used only when there is a tangible net benefit: new real ice in this case, not improving some ratios to be used in some future election brochure. Nor should we buy things we don't need to just because they are on sale. This is the same council that voted down $300,000 for artificial outdoor ice, the amenity Oakvillians said they most wanted, as not good value. We are told not all the facts are out on the Dominion Twin Rinks purchase. I and my other shinny-playing and tax-paying friends will be waiting to hear them and to understand the reasons for this decision.
