www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 27, 2007 - 37 Artscene Oakville Beaver · FRIDAY, APRIL 27, 2007 DEREK WOOLLAM / SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD ARTIST: Montreal artist, Monika Napier, an instructor at the University of Saskatchewan, recently opened her exhibit mad, mad, mad, mad world at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens. The exhibit of artwork made from extension cords and cable ties is on display until June 3. Mad, mad, mad, mad world explores over-consumption It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world in Gairloch Gardens. The recently opened Oakville Galleries' show features the work of Monika Napier a whole bunch of extension cords woven together in different ways to speak to mass over-consumption. As curator Helen Marzolf, puts it, Napier's work "crosses the line between art and craft. The artistic abilities, the demonstrated craftsmanship, the subtle humour and the creativity deployed in her works lead the viewer to rethink the connection between craft and technology." Her works, woven bundles of extension cords bound with cable ties, make the viewer question the use of our resources. Napier's show is named after Stanley Kramer's 1963 slapstick movie, It's A Mad Mad Mad Mad World. Her show, Marzolf says, "takes potshots at the maniacal intensity of North American consumption of resources." Napier transforms extension cords and invites "reinterpretation of the materials of everyday living," the curator says. Nearly all of the works were assembled the same way as basketry, knitting, crocheting, weaving or hand-built pottery. "Napier's technique is exacting, obsessively precise," Marzolf says. Mad, mad, mad, mad world runs at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens until June 3. The show is curated by Helen Marzolf and Brenda Barry Byrne.
