www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 27, 2007 - 23 Oakville Place joins growing number of green power users Continued from page 18 existing grid. In turn, Bullfrog pays green energy providers to produce the same amount of electricity to match the amount being used by clients. This means that Bullfrog power is just as reliable as conventional power and no extra equipment is needed for the switch. "We make sure as much renewable electricity is put on to the grid to meet their use," said Heintzman. "Most importantly, we use that demand to get new renewable generation in the province. The notion is the grid is like a big bathtub filled with electricity and the more green electricity that gets on there, the less coal and gas will be required." The switch may prove beneficial to both the environment and Ivanhoe Cambridge's business. A recent study conducted by Environics Research Group shows that two thirds of Canadian consumers are more likely to switch to companies and retailers that have demonstrated a commitment to green policies. While green energy does not produce emissions, there is still the question of energy consumption and conservation. Heintzman feels that those who switch to Bullfrog will also take the initiative of conserving energy. "Interestingly, we do find that when people do start to pay a premium for electricity, they become more attuned to how much they are using, and much more careful and vigilant in monitoring their use," said Heintzman. "The decision to go green tends to be a really philosophical decision, and once people have decided that that is the way they want to leave their lives, they are quite diligent in pursuing it." Heintzman's view seems to be shared by Oakville Place. The shopping centre also has other means of being environmentally friendly. "We also have externally audited recycling program," said La Ronde. "Last year at the end of our audit, we added to the existing program with the merchants. So we provided all the merchants with blue boxes, as well as listings of what can and cannot be recycled. All of our back corridors are serviced with recycling bins and stations, so when people are taking out their garbage they know where to take it and how to sort it. Also, we have regular pick ups for our recycling." Beyond the recycling program and green energy, Oakville place is in the process of changing all light bulbs and lamps to low consumption alternatives, such as fluorescent lights. The shopping centre also turns down air conditioning and lights when possible in a bid to conserve energy. At the end of the day, the 13 shopping centres across the province will be producing less carbon emissions, and that is a victory for the environment. "Mom, I want to PROGRAM VIDEO is not a camp!
