www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 27, 2007 - 15 Labour council hosts Day of Mourning ceremony Saturday The Oakville and District Labour Council will host a Day of Mourning event, this Saturday, in which spectators will have the opportunity to hear about the dangers of unsafe workplaces. The ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. at the Oakville Public Library located at 120 Navy Street. Workers, their families and labour leaders in Oakville will call on government regulators to get tough with employers who are failing to provide employees with legally required health and safety training. "Workers will continue to die and suffer lifealtering injuries and illnesses if this trend of non-compliance with legally required health and safety training continues," said Willie Lambert, president of the Oakville and District Labour Council, who will speak at the event. "We also call attention to pressing health and safety concerns not yet adequately addressed through regulation in Ontario including new workers, violence, harassment, ergonomics and stress. We call on the government to follow the lead of other Canadian jurisdictions and enact specific regulatory protection including mandating training." This year's national day of mourning has no shortage of people to mourn. Ontario's Workplace Safety and Insurance Board in 2006 says workers filed more than 341,000 occupational injury and disease claims. The Oakville District and Labour Council also stated that work related fatality claims reported to the WSIB topped 500 in 2006. April 28 was designated as Canada's National Day of Mourning in 1991 so workers, their families and others could reflect on how lives are affected by unsafe and unhealthy workplaces. Kelsey's owner holds fundraiser for a childhood friend in need A fundraiser will be held Wednesday, May 2 at the north Oakville Kelsey's Restaurant to assist Oakville resident Bill Fallon Jr. Fallon, a former Gordon E. Perdue High School student and long-time Oakville resident was recently released from hospital after suffering serious health effects from his weight -- he weighed just over 500 pounds. Fallon believes his weight is related to obesity/eating disorder and hopes to get the help in changing his lifestyle that he needs to literally survive from a Guelph rehabilitation facility. Accepted to the waiting list, Fallon now faces up to a year's wait to access the only government-funded bed available in the facility. Private funding may help Fallon gain admittance earlier and, in the wake of an Oakville Beaver article about his plight, the community has rallied to fundraise the cash. Fallon, who had his stomach "stapled" some 20 years ago, did not find a long-term answer in that procedure. Now he hopes to check into the Guelph facility for a four to nine-week program, however a bed costs approximately $7,000 per month. After The Oakville Beaver article appeared, childhood friend, Chris Tymstra, owner of Corbett Sports and the north Oakville Kelsey's organized the May 2 fundraiser to help his buddy. The event will be held Wednesday, May 2 at 8 p.m. at Kelsey's Restaurant Oakville North, 301 Hays Blvd. (by WalMart). Anyone who can't attend, but would like to contribute could forward a cheque to Corbetts, 120 Speers Rd., Oakville ON L6K 2E7 c/o Bill Fallon.
