www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday April 20, 2007 - 19 Visual Merchandising students shine spotlight on themselves By Andrew Fruch SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Melding together creativity with practical application in a visually pleasing package is exactly what graduates of the Sheridan Visual Merchandising program did at their year end visual merchandising show on April 17 -18 at the Sheridan campus. "I call it a visual thesis," said Louise Franklin, a member of the program's faculty. "Everything that they've done, comes together in one event and what they are doing is promoting themselves for the industry," The two-year diploma program is designed to prepare students for careers in anything from prop styling to fashion merchandising. The year-end show sees students constructing their own booth to showcase their portfolios. It succeeds in attracting numerous recruiters who are looking to hire the graduates. "The course that they teach is very hands on," said Marie Petroff, of Pi Media, who was on site to interview graduates. "And this is a good way to see it. You can look at all the paper you'd like, but it's a great idea to physically see in three dimensions what they can do and how they present themselves." Among the faculty and recruiters, the students themselves were at their best, hoping to land their dream job. With approximately 80 per cent of graduates working in the industry or a related field within six months of graduation, chances seem to be in the students' favour. For the students, their employment ambitions are the result of the faculty, who instructed them over the last two years. "It's been wonderful. The teachers here are just amazing," said Nicole Laroque, one of the graduating students. " It's been a great two years, I learned a lot and met some really wonderful people. Now I want to do something TH "You can look at all the paper you'd like, but it's a great idea to physically see in three dimensions what they can do and how they present themselves." Marie Petroff, of Pi media, a potential employer said Doherty. "We go out into the industry, learn what is hot and current, then bring it that back to the students and really share that with them, and with the placements they do over two years, we can really help connect them with the industry." At the end of the day, the visual merchandising year end show is a testament to the hard work of the students and the dedicated faculty who taught them to hone the sills used to create their fantastic displays.
