"In addition to being a good test of endurance for our swimmers, the Swim for Heart gave us an opportunity to raise funds for a really good cause," said club coach Mette Novais, who organized the swim along with Masters swimmer Laura Agro-DeRosa. Swimmer Sonia Rodrigues dedicated her swim to Melissa Rezende, who recently suffered a stroke. "Heart disease hits every family and it is good to know that the money raised will go towards hundreds of research teams to help support their work to develop leading-edge treatments and world-class prevention strategies," Rodrigues said. Oakville Mayor Rob Burton and councillors Marc Grant and Roger Lapsworth attended the event. "Our members really appreciated the mayor and the councillors taking time to come to the event" said Randy Swyme, a 30-year Masters veteran who swam more than three kilometres during the hour. Will Mckinty swam approximately four kilometres. The Oakville Masters Swim Club provides year-round fitness and competitive swim training for adults of all ages. The club welcomes all levels of swimmers, from former competitive swimmers looking for a high-intensity workout, tri-athletes who need to improve swimming ability or recreational swimmers who can swim only a few laps of a pool. The Oakville Basketball Club's under-12 select Vipers came within a basket of winning gold at Basketball Ontario's provincial tournament recently in London. The Vipers battled Brampton into overtime in the gold-medal game, dropping a 52-51 decision and claiming provincial silver. Oakville's only other loss at the competition came in its first game, a 42-40 defeat to Brampton. The Vipers then posted wins against East York and Owen Sound to conclude the opening round and defeated East York once again in the semifinals. Members of the team are David Bysouth, Mitchell Geddes, Desmond Stanley, Marcus Armstrong, Colin Munden, Tyler Morrison, Phillip Rebiere, Spencer Marion, Matthew Geronimo, Kevin Keskemeti, Zachary Suchanek, Bennet Jarvis, Thomas Santos and Max Lambert.
