While most of Oakville's contingent has experience at provincials, it is an exciting time for those getting their first exposure to the event. Jackson said the gymnasts begin training last July for the three provincial qualifiers held throughout the season. He said it is remarkable to watch them improve throughout the season and their season culminates with the provincials. "This is the Olympic Games for them," Jackson said. "As they get older, they'll go to more competitions, but for the young kids, this is always the most important event for them." Also competing at provincials for Oakville will be Nathan Bollinger, Cole Becker, Eric Mariglia, Jack McGarr, Jordan Bollinger, Mathew Wilson, Adam Kassam, Stuart Bollinger, Robert Wilson, Jeremie Quek, Daniel Capstick, Chase Norman and Miles Little. Local players dominated the annual Ontario Hockey League coaches poll released last week, as John Tavares, Tyler Donati, Stefan Legein and Sam Gagner were each named in multiple categories. It came as no surprise that Tavares, the Oshawa Generals sniper who broke Wayne Gretzky's record for goals by a 16-year-old with an OHL-leading 92, was named the most dangerous in the goal area. "You give that guy the puck and he's going to score," said Legein of the Mississauga IceDogs. "He has this gift for putting the puck in the net. If he doesn't get the right shot, he's still going to find a way to score. Nothing is going to stop him." Donati, who notched a career high 54 goals with the Belleville Bulls, was the runner-up. Tavares and Donati also finished onetwo in the voting for East Conference's smartest player. Tavares earned a third honour, being named the best stickhandler while Donati was third. Those roles were reversed in the best playmaker category with Donati being judged the best by the coaches while Tavares was third. Donati "scary" to play against "(Donati) is good at grinding the puck around down low and creating opportunities," said London goalie Steve Mason. "You give him too much room and he's going to make you look silly." "You never know what he's going to do," Legein added. "He can make something happen out of nothing. He's scary to play against." Of course, Legein didn't fare too badly himself. Coaches cited him as the conference's most improved player after he went from seven goals and 16 points in 2005/06 to 43 goals and 75 points this season. Legein, who led the league in shorthanded goals, was also named the conference's top skater. "He has the ability to go wide and use his speed to cut in for a good scoring opportunity,"said Mason, a former minor hockey teammate with the Oakville Rangers. "He's really had a breakout year and it's great to see him doing so well."
