www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday April 11, 2007 - 5 The tab for wooing voters Continued from page 1 candidates went toward advertising, brochures and signs. Burton, Wright and Stoate, as well as other candidates ending the election campaign with large deficits, have all filed interim financial statements. They will have until the end of the year to try to raise more money to recover their costs. Burton says he hopes to put a least put a dent into his deficit. Along with his costs for this campaign, the town's new mayor spent more than $80,000 out of his own pocket in 2003, when he lost his bid for the mayor's job by a handful of votes. "This has been a very financially intensive hobby," he admitted. Burton will hold a fundraising reception on May 11, in conjunction with the launch of a book co-written by an Oakville author which profiles a number of Canadian community leaders, including four local residents. Stoate, however, says his fundraising efforts are effectively over and doubts he'll see any new money raised. As he didn't file nomination papers for the mayor's position until mid-September, Stoate says he got a late start on the campaign and his team made a deliberate decision not to undertake an extensive fundraising drive prior to the election. "We decided we couldn't waste any of our energy getting money, we had to spend all of our energy getting votes," he said. Despite the high financial cost, Stoate adds that he doesn't regret running for the mayor's job. "I ran for the right rea- Janice Wright sons," he said. "I didn't see an option I could support." Councillor Jeff Knoll, who ended his campaign more than $10,000 in the red, also says he's resigned to settling up his accounts out of his own pocket. Knoll spent a whopping $20,452 more than twice as much as most other successful council candidates to win his Ward 5 town and regional council seat for a third term. Ward 3 councillor Mary Chapin, who shelled out nearly $13,000, was the only other successful candidate to spend more than $10,000 on the campaign. "I really, really like my job, and I felt there were a lot of things I'd still like to do," said Knoll, who noted that the hotly-contested mayoralty race made it harder for council candidates to get the attention of potential voters. While Knoll spent $20,000 to defend his seat, Ward 1 councillor Ralph Robinson spent more than $8,000 to be acclaimed to his. The veteran councillor, who traditionally files his nomination papers at the beginning of January during an election year, says his campaign team begins preparing and fundraising in February or March for the November election. "I always prepare as if I'm being contested," said Robinson. "How can you take Chris Stoate anything for granted?" However, both Knoll and Robinson's spending is eclipsed by that of Bruce Jones. Jones forked out $22,116 of his own money to seek a sec- ond term as trustee for the Halton District School Board. He spent about 10 times as much as most other candidates seeking to be elected to the $13,000 a year job. His opponent Kelly Amos spent only $2,306 on her campaign, and lost to Jones by fewer than 200 votes. The financial statements can be found on the town's website (www.oakville.ca), by clicking on the 2006 Municipal Elections tab on the right side of the page, then choosing Financial Statements.
