www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday April 7, 2007 - 5 And the winner is...Forest Trail A school opening in Oakville this September finally has a name. Two weeks after trustees with the Halton District School Board rejected two French-language names for a purely French immersion school opening in the west end, they have agreed on a name for the elementary facility. Very little discussion of the subject was required at last Wednesday night's board committee meeting with the result being a majority of trustees voted by secret ballot to call the school, generically called West Oak Trails #3, Forest Trail. Also on the latest short list of names for consideration were Grand Oak, Sixteen Village and Trail Ridge. Ward 4 Oakville trustee Kathryn BatemanOlmstead, in whose riding the Pine Glen Road school will be located, said there was general consensus among the public and the board's naming committee the second time around. "As much as I like Grand Oak the majority of people, and kids, liked Forest Trail." Bateman-Olmstead said while the official name of the school will be Forest Trail, it's likely that the actual nameplate affixed to the school's exterior will say Ecole Forest Trail School, a common practice with schools offering French immersion, she noted. Ecole means school in French. Forest Trail is designed for 550 pupils accommodating Grades 1-8. It is scheduled to open as a Grades 1-7 school this September accommodating students within a `single-track' French Immersion structure; it will be a bilingual school with all students receiving 50 per cent instruction in both English and French. From an original list of 160 names submitted by the public earlier this year, a committee of six people representing school board staff, trustees and the public recommended four French-language names: Ecole Seize Village School, Ecole Glen du Nord School, Ecole Pierre Elliott Trudeau and Ecole du village School. Ecole Seize Village School and Ecole du Village School were both defeated in votes by trustees, sending the naming committee back to square one.
