www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday March 31, 2007 - 7 Region moves closer to 311 phone service The business plan for a 311 phone service in Halton has received a stamp of approval from Halton Regional council. The document, which lays out details of the service designed to simplify residents' access to non-emergency local government services, was endorsed by council at its meeting last Wednesday. A report from Halton Community Relations Director Carleen Carroll to council explains 311 "eliminates the need for a caller to understand which level of government provides which services and then determine which phone number for that government service is the right one." "It (311) allows citizens to request a service, carry out transactions or receive general municipal information," the report notes. The system differs from the 211 phone service model previously approved by council in that 211 is an information and referral service on community information. Staff estimates that the Access Halton call centre will receive an additional 221,000 calls per year as a result of 311. The system will operate between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. on regular business days. The 311 service is expected to be up and running by the summer, with a public launch in the fall.
