Full-time ALPA teachers would meet with the technical directors every two weeks. The program also entails the hiring of qualified instructors who would be present at each 75-minute morning class. They would be aided about 70 per cent of the time by an ALPA teacher. Prevent burnout "After two weeks teaching one sport, the third week will be an unrelated sport," said McNeice. "That's to help prevent burnout." Activities such as cross-country skiing, racquetball and low organizational games will be scheduled. Fun will be a key component in the program, always an important aspect in teaching 12-14 year old kids, says McNeice. For 40 minutes each afternoon, four days a week, nutrition, fitness training, athletic leadership and exercise science will be taught. The scholastic timetable, while being well within Ontario Education Ministry guidelines, will be more flexible to suit the special schedule of the ALPA participants. The long-term goal of the ALPA program is to develop students who can provide athletic leadership at whatever high school they attend, instill a healthy lifestyle that will guide them the rest of their lives, and improve their skills as they move through the high school and university levels of competition, says McNeice. "And it's the chance for a kid to experience two years having fun at something they feel passionate about," he added. The program isn't inexpensive -- tuition is $11,500 a year -- but since the school is a religious-based, non-profit private educational institution, there are tax refunds available for parents. In its first year, ALPA will have 25-36 students enrolled. McNeice has until March 31 to hire teachers for the course. "We have special programs for art and music students, so it just makes sense there should be a program for athletics as well," said McNeice.
