SPORTSBRIEFS Hinnen, a two-time Canadian junior cycling champion, made his professional debut earlier this month at the Redlands Bicycle Classic in California, placing 42nd in the pro/elite men's Category 1/2 race. The top-ranked junior in Canada, Hinnen is the only rider in history to win all three jerseys in the Tour de Abitibi, won the Canadian national road race championship in 2006 and was the Canadian time trial champion in 2005. Seven local squads in Burlington Cup Seven Oakville high schools will ice teams in next week's Burlington Cup junior hockey tournament, a showcase of each school's young hockey talent. Unlike Halton regular-season play, the Burlington Cup allows rep players to participate and gives them a taste of high school competition. The tournament will begin Monday at Burlington's Appleby Ice Centre and Mainway Arena. Quarter-finals will begin Wednesday at 3 p.m., with semifinals slated for 6:30 and 8 p.m. The championship game will be contested Thursday at 4 p.m. TRI-COUNTY CHAMPIONS: The Oakville peewee AA Rangers won their Tri-County league championship recently, sweeping the Brampton Batallion in the final. Local peewees sweep Tri-County final A two-game sweep of the Brampton Battalion clinched the Tri-County championship for the Oakville peewee AA Rangers, who also defeated Milton, Caledon and Stoney Creek on their way to the finals. Oakville opened the best-of-three final with a 5-2 win in Brampton, then returned home two nights later and edged the Battalion 4-3. Francois Cote scored the title-clinching goal, roofing the rebound of a Bryanna Neuwald point shot to break a 3-3 tie in the third period. Taylor Stewart, Tim Berberian and Braden Wallace also scored in Game 2. Josh Dube sparked the Rangers with a pair of markers in the series opener. Sam Jakubauskis, Jason Mitchell and Wallace added singles. Among those earning assists in the final were Matthew Capern, Eric Eustace, Patrick Norris, Cameron Farrell and Josh Pilo. Taylor McLeod and Adam Wirkowski each recorded a victory in goal, while Alex Rothier and Alex Gromlus provided physical defensive play. The team is coached by Ray Dube, Les Wallace and Bruce Farrell. Mark Capern is the team manager and Norbert Wirkowski is the trainer. Local snipers still hot in OHL playoffs Oakville's Sam Gagner, John Tavares and Tyler Donati have picked up in the OHL playoffs where they left off in the regular season. Going into yesterday's action, London Knights rookie Gagner ranked second in OHL post-season scoring with a goal and 10 assists in four games. Tavares had two goals and eight assists in his first four games for the Oshawa Generals.
