"I decided that I'm going to go and do this walk for this guy," he said. When St. Patrick's Day came a year later Williams joined Heard and a young man who had taken time off school to participate, at Toronto City Hall. "Us two guys were just as green as green could be doing this walk and not knowing where we were going, but Barney was there and when he started off we almost had to run to keep up with him. He was 62 at the time," said Williams. Although Heard was not able to complete the walk, Williams and the young man pushed on, reaching downtown Oakville 11 hours after the beginning of the walk. "We got into town 8 o'clock at night, we had blisters on our feet and everything like that, but everyone at the Halton was waiting for us." Williams, who lives in Hamilton, but was raised and educated in Oakville, has completed the walk every year since, sometimes by himself, sometimes with company. "There have been some experiences along the way that you remember," said Williams. "A young girl one time came out and gave me a cupcake, right out of the oven." "Then there was one year on my 25th anniversary where a bunch of school kids came out. They had a big sign and they walked me in." Other experiences Williams would just as soon like to forget. "In 1980 it was so bad my feet were almost all blisters. I was going from one tree to the next tree. My feet were bleeding because I had these rubber boots on because of the weather, but I was determined to do it and I did hobble in." Last year's journey was no walk in the park either. "I was in a lot of pain last year. I don't know why. I really had to think about why I was doing this," said Williams. The weather has not always been kind to Williams with rain showering him for four hours during one walk in the 80's. This weekend's forecast is calling for snow, which Williams says brings its own set of challenges to the walk. "That means there might be snow on the path, so we might have to walk on the road. It's going to be messy if it turns mild and we'll have to watch out for puddles and guys splashing you along the way," he said. Williams says he endures all of this to keep the tradition alive for those who can't. "I'm doing it for people who can't do it. People who are handicapped, people who are seniors, people who are shutins. I'm healthy enough to be able to do the walk," he said. Williams would like to continue these walks until 2011 when he will MARCH BREAK NEVER COST YOU SO LITTLE FOR A LIMITED TIME, GET A STYLISH 2007 S60 FOR $0 DOWN, $0 SECURITY, AND $0 FIRST MONTH PAYMENT.ADD SOME STYLE AND POWER TO THE STREETS WITH A 2.5 LITRE, 5 CYLINDER TURBOCHARGED ENGINE AND STABILITY AND TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMS (STC). Williams welcomes anyone who wants to join him on his walk, which begins at 9 a.m. at Toronto City Hall, but advises anyone who does so to take care of their feet. "If your feet get damaged in any way with the blisters and that you're going to be in bad shape. You have to protect your feet and your legs because those are the things that are going to keep you going." Although he goes way out of his way to honour tradition one St. Patrick's Day ritual Williams says he will not observe is the drinking of green beer. "I prefer whiskey," he said. 60 S VOLVO OF OAKVILLE 770 Pacific Road, Oakville (888) 665-0028 volvoofoakville.com W. BRONTE RD. PACIFIC RD.
