CR-V EX-L model RE4877JN shown PURCHASE FINANCING IIHS `2007 Top Safety Pick' ¥ Starting from $27,700 * 4.9 % FOR 36 MONTHS While the 2008 Avenger is only about half-an-inch longer than the last generation Sebring, it is a full four inches taller and that means a noticeably larger interior. The driver, for instance, sits 2.5 inches higher than in the last Sebring. There's also 2.5 inches more headroom and 1.2 inches more shoulder room. With the fold-forward front passenger seat, the driver can create a very useable worktable. If your laptop is Bluetooth enabled as well as your phone, it means, you may never have to go to the office again. While almost identical under the skin, the Avenger and Sebring differ in temperament. The Avenger is styled with the more aggressive lines and the signature crosshair grille of the Charger while the Sebring is more boulevardier with the big Chrysler grille and winged badge. Inside the Avenger is more European in look and the feel of the materials and the textures of the plastics. The R/T I drove had the black leather interior and that also meant black trim. This combination is very much like being in a Mercedes-Benz C-Class. It was a bit austere for me. But when I was doing photography the next day, that R/T had a nice cashmere and brown two-tone color scheme that, to my eye, worked a lot better. During the test drive we had the between-seats beverage cooler/heater on full cold. My co-driver pulled out a can about an hour into the drive and marveled at the beads of condensation, saying it kept things colder than his fridge back home. Because I did not sample the 2.4- or 2.7-litre, impressions are based on the R/T. It is a handier piece to drive than the Charger with the 3.5-litre V6 I borrowed the night before to visit a friend. The 3.5-litre is a very punchy unit, especially off the line. While sight lines are fine, the very high back deck makes reversing to park something you take great care in doing. All-in-all considering the many optional extras the Avenger has and its slightly lower price, it makes sense to opt for an Avenger over the Charger. By the same token, I don't think there are many competitors right now in the same category that can match the Avenger for features like the coolers, the AWD and that impressive MyGig system. From an almost forgotten family plodder a decade ago, the 2008 Avenger is driving up the centre of the mid-size sedan segment with looks, power and loads of personality.
