www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday February 7, 2007 - 13 Family's own experience with leukemia a determining factor Continued from page 12 The Los, Kim, her husband, Walter, and Victor, are hoping Cook will attend the kick-a-thon, but so far haven't had confirmation. Daniel Cook is featured in the children's show This is Daniel Cook. He became the official spokesperson for Kids Believe in Sick Kids in 2006. "Victor met (Cook) at SickKids when Victor was receiving a special award for Kids Believe in SickKids for children who fundraise," said Lo. Awards were given out to recognize contributions. In fact, Victor wasn't the only Oakville representative acknowledged, St. Ignatius of Loyola students who organized the Infusion fashion show were recognized as the top fundraisers. The Los have lived in Oakville since 1991. "Our family recently opened our own taekwondo club at the end of June and so Victor decided to do a kick-a-thon type of event. We decided to open it up to our other students if they Kim Lo wished to participate and the response has been overwhelming," said Lo. So far, about 30 students have expressed a desire to participate. "They range from orange belt, right down to white belts," said Lo. Only children will be doing the kicking for half an hour on Feb. 17 -- from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. "We will have donation boxes set up at our club and all proceeds will go directly to SickKids," said Lo. This isn't Victor's first time Walter Lo fundraising. To date he has held a fundraising barbecue and operated a lemonaid stand on another occasion. In November he was recognized. "A couple hundred dollars is a lot for a child," said Lo. That's what the Sick Kids program is all about, getting kids involved in the community and rec- ognizing their efforts. There is no fundraising target set for the kick-athon, but the Los hope to make it an annual event. "We'd like to challenge other martial arts schools to also do kick-a-thons," said Lo. The fact that Lo and her husband's first son died of leukemia is "a big determining factor for our involvement," said Lo. Victor, who attends Maple Grove Public School, also has a two-and-ahalf-year-old sister, Lian, who Lo calls their "miracle" baby, born when Lo was 41. The former executive assistant, who now works full-time alongside her husband, said it was her husband's, known as "Master Walter" to his students, dream to set up his own academy after teaching taekwondo part-time for more than 20 years. While the training offered can be rigorous, Walter Lo is more interested in students looking beyond the merely physical and achieving a "black belt of life." By that Lo means taekwondo is less about breaking bricks and more about building confidence and character, not to mention learning life skills. "We're interested in working with the community," said Lo, a fourth degree black belt who wants to establish a solid program focused on both at-risk youth and young people with an abundance of surplus energy.
