Blades win weekend pair On the ice, the Blades busted out of a mini-slump last weekend with a pair of one-sided victories over weaker West Conference foes. Oakville doubled the Buffalo Jr. Sabres 8-4 Friday at Dominion Twin Rinks, then traveled to Streetsville Sunday and dealt the Derbys an 8-1 defeat. The wins, along with the Hamilton Red Wings' 1-0 loss to the Burlington Cougars Monday, kept Oakville atop the West Conference standings. The Blades will host the Brampton Capitals Friday at Dominion Twin Rinks, a contest that could prove pivotal in deciding who will finish first in the conference. The Capitals are one point behind Oakville but have two games in hand on the Blades, who have four games remaining in the regular season. Hamilton, meanwhile, is tied with Oakville in points and has a game in hand. The Red Wings and Blades will clash next weekend in Oakville. "We're taking it one day at a time. We can't look too far ahead," Edwards said of the tight race for home-ice advantage throughout the upcoming playoffs. "We're going into Friday's game knowing it's a huge game for us." Brent Clarke recorded a hat trick Friday for Oakville, while Anthony Pototschnik scored twice. Atom Wolfpack wins Sabatino title Michael Ferrari and Matthew Gima each scored twice as the Oakville Wolfpack defeated the Oakville Wings 51 in the atom championship game of last weekend's Frank Sabatino Memorial house league hockey tournament. Colin Nowers also tallied and added two assists for the Wolfpack. John David Ferrari, Paul Wilcock, Evan Lippay and Michael Ferrari contributed helpers. Jacob Serensits, assisted by Ryan Wolski and Justin Polgar, notched the lone Wings marker. The Wolfpack's dominance was not limited to the championship game, however. The Wolfpack earned a berth in the final with a 5-0 semifinal victory over the Erindale Atoms, with goals by Michael Ferrari (two), John David Ferrari, Nowers and Gima. David Siklos and Brennan Froud each had two assists. The Wings made it an all-Oakville final by edging the Brampton Snipers 32 in overtime in the other semifinal. Jamison Higa, Alex Kolisnyk and Colin Clarke score for the Wings, with assists going to Sam McAugley, Kristjan Grimson, Dionysis Stergiotis, Higa, Wolski and Polgar. Local teams did not enjoy similar success on the peewee side as no Oakville entries advanced out of the round-robin. Lorne Park won the peewee final against Port Credit, a game that required two overtime sessions to decide. The Frank Sabatino Memorial Tournament, held annually for the past six years, honours the memory of the former Minor Oaks Hockey Association atom red house league convener. Sabatino, who enjoyed watching and participating in many sports, lost his battle with leukemia on Nov. 15, 2001. Each year, money raised through fundraising activities during tournament weekend is donated to charity. This year's donation, $1,500 towards Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital's cancer palliative care program, was made in the memory of long-time MOHA volunteer and former peewee red Eagles coach Ken Morgan. Lacrosse registration begins this weekend The increasing popularity of lacrosse across the country has been reflected lately in the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association, which is expecting record registration numbers for the 2007 season. The addition of a second arena at the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre has enabled the OMLA to increase its membership and offer house league and rep lacrosse to more players. In the past, registration had been limited to slightly more than 700 players. Spaces are available in all house league divisions for players born between 1990-2003, and in all rep divisions from tyke (1999-2000 birth year) to intermediate (1986-1990). Registration dates are Saturday, Jan. 27 and Saturday, Feb. 10, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. Copies of birth certificates, passports or baptismal certificates are required for all new registrants. The house league season begins in late April and runs through the end of June. House league players practice once a week and play once a week, generally on Saturdays, at Glen Abbey. Rep squads begin field play in the spring and go indoors for box competition during the summer.
