That's good news for Oakville resident Terence Young, president of Drug Safety Canada, who first brought the suit to the courts in the name of his 15-year-old daughter. Vanessa Young died March 19, 2000 after taking Prepulsid for bloating. In April 2001 a coroner's jury in Hamilton determined Vanessa died of a heart arrhythmia caused, in part, by cisapride toxicity from Prepulsid and made 59 recommendations to prevent similar deaths. Among the recommendations were clear safety warnings on drug labels and mandatory adverse reaction reporting for health care professionals. "This decision is one for the angels. Vanessa would be very pleased this was initiated in her name because class actions are the only way ordinary people can have access to justice," said Young.
