www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 17, 2007 - 33 Wren's recruits paying off for Burlington Cougars By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Not that Oliver Wren's 28-save performance wasn't an important part of the Burlington Cougars' upset of the Oakville Blades, but his biggest contribution to Friday's 5-2 win came months earlier. That's when Wren recruited a pair of former high school teammates to join the Cougars. With Kerry Barchan and Josh Shrum entering their final year of junior hockey, both were hoping to move to the Provincial Jr. A League. They had spent the previous season with Port Colborne Sailors of the Golden Horseshoe Jr. B League and had received training camp invitations from their hometown Jr. A team. However, their former team- mate persuaded them to give the Cougars a chance. "I just told them it was a great organization, with a great coach," Wren said. "Wes (Wiseman) is the most loyal guy and if they wanted to be treated fairly, this is a great place to play." The successful sales pitch helped draw the two Oakville natives to Burlington and the Cougars have been reaping the rewards ever since. Barchan was named the conference's top player in October and leads the Cougars with 29 goals and 59 points while Shrum is the league's top scoring defenceman with 57 points, including a team-leading 48 assists. For the trio of Oakville residents, who played together on Q.E. Park's 2004 Halton high school championship team, the win meant more than just knocking off the league's first-place team in their own arena. www.oakvilleminorbaseball.com Email: omba@oakvilleminorbaseball.com 905-847-5545 STAY TUNED FOR 2007 REGISTRATION DATES! Meanwhile, the Cougars had just won three of their last 10.
