"USING COMMUNICATION TO BUILD BETTER COMMUNITIES" WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2007 68 Pages $1.00 (plus GST) Adam Spencer, who turned 26 yesterday, is accused of defrauding about 100 investors of $8.4 million While there had been numerous rumours about Spencer's whereabouts, it appears he was in a Chicago suburb staying with a friend from the race car circuit, a source said. Bilked investors who had tried to track his movements were tipped off that his father, who is in the banking business, had travelled there over the weekend to escort his fugitive son back home. A Canada-wide warrant was issued for his arrest Dec. 6 after he broke a promise to turn himself in to police. BARRIE ERSKINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER BUSINESS SIDELINED: The Running Company owner Greg McKinnon stands in front of his water and smoke-damaged store at 118 Thomas St. A weekend fire that started on the top floor of the two-storey building has cost him everything in his basementlevel store, amounting to more than $100,000 in merchandise. Fire shelves three downtown businesses By Krissie Rutherford OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF See Investors page 4 Broken water pipes may have saved the building at 181 Thomas St. from a major fire over the weekend. The blaze likely began on the top level of the two-storey commercial building home to Exotic Nail Spa, Emporio Salon and The Running Company but by the time the Oakville Fire Department was on scene Sunday morning, it was out. "The fire appears to have been extinguished by the domestic plumbing water that was squirting all over the place," said Michael Harrison, Oakville Fire Department public education officer. "Water was running everywhere," added Greg McKinnon, owner and operator of The Running Company, which occupies the basement level of the building. "There was water all down the building, on the sidewalk, spilling down the stairs into the store, running out the door."
