14 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 17, 2007 www.oakvillebeaver.com Aid needed to ship dental clinic to Guatemala Canadian Central American Relief Effort-CCARE is fundraising to send a dental clinic to Guatemala. The 40-ft. container that will house the dental clinic is estimated to cost nearly $5,000 to ship. Rutherford Warehouse and Global Logistics has donated a warehouse to house the items and will co-ordinate the shipment. The dental clinic consists of everything a dentist would need -- chairs, instruments, lamps, desk, and material to use for dental care. CCARE was founded and is headed by Oakville resident Hilda Rossi to assist the Mayan Chorti people who live in the Merendon Mountains of Guatemala after Hurricane Mitch in 1998. CCARE makes an annual aid mission to Guatemala taking supplies, donations, and expertise in the form of volunteers. The dental clinic -- expected to ship late this month or early next, will be headed to the municipality of La Union, which has 25,464 inhabitants -- most of whom live in 36 small villages in the Merendon Mountains. The clinic will be installed in the medical clinic in La Union. Future dentists who are students at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala will do their internships and donate services to the Mayan communities. The dental clinic is a donation by Hamilton dentist Dr. Russell Grover who visited Guatemala on an aid mission and whose wife, Heidi, is CCARE's Secretary and the Team Leader of the Dental Project. CCARE's mandate is to help the Mayan Chorti become self-sufficient, though health, education and economic development. Since 2001 CCARE has organized humanitarian trips to Guatemala, over 100 Canadians have participated and to date, CCARE has helped build houses, a community store, a multiskill centre, and a community centre/health clinic.
