www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday January 10, 2007 - 33 Metcalfe hopes to impress at Future Stars exhibition Young defenceman bypassed in OHL draft due to injuries By Eamonn Maher SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER HORNETS STING: The Oakville atom C Hornets girls hockey team recently won the championship at a tournament in Mississauga. The Hornets went 3-0-1 at the competition, tying Mississauga before defeating Orangeville, Barrie and Cambridge. Of the 80-or-so players suiting up for tonight's Provincial Jr. A Hockey League Future Stars games in Georgetown, one of the host team's representatives may have a little more to prove than most of the teenage participants. Sixteen-year-old defenceman Spencer Metcalfe was captain of the Oakville minor midget AAA Rangers last season in his first season of eligibility for the Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection, but leg injuries led to the Grade 11 St. Thomas Aquinas student going undrafted. But after returning to full health last summer and attending veteran NHL blueliner Adam Foote's hockey school in Whitby, Metcalfe impressed the Georgetown Raiders' braintrust enough to be signed on as the club's youngest skater. He hasn't looked out Spencer Metcalfe of place playing up on the wing, notching three goals and six assists so far in 2006-07 in 32 games. "I injured one knee, and then there was a little incident where I was hit by a car during a snowstorm and got a bad contusion from it last November," said the 6-foot-1, 188pound Oakville resident, who also had appendix and hernia problems. "It happened just "I was skating before all of the big tournaments with braces on that the scouts are watching and when I came back, I was skating both my knees and with braces on both my knees and it was like Forrest it was like Forrest Gump with the Gump with the clicking noises and everything. clicking noises and But I had a really good summer everything." and got back to being better than I was before I got hurt. (The Spencer Metcalfe Future Stars game) should be fun and there are only a couple of 1990s out there, so I just want to do my best and hopefully get noticed." Plenty of scouts expected to attend Atom C Hornets close out 2006 with title The Oakville atom C Hornets completed 2006 in style, winning the B/C championship at the recent Mississauga Girls Hockey League rep tournament. Oakville started the tournament with a 2-2 draw against the host Mississauga team, thanks to goals from Chloe Eidlitz and Annie Gutgesell. The Hornets then blanked the Orangeville Tigers 7-0, earning a bye to the semifinal against the Barrie Sharks. In the semifinal, Tegan Duncan and Lia Widdell provided reliable goaltending and Cassidy McPherson, Liana Giovino and Shannon McGuire scored goals as Oakville advanced to the championship game against the Cambridge Roadrunners. The final was a defensive battle as Giovino's first-period goal stood up as the winner. Duncan recorded the shutout for the Hornets, who had several chances to pad their lead -- including a shot by Emily Schnarr that hit the post -- but held on for the 1-0 victory. The Hornets now shift their focus to league play, where they entered the second half of the regular season with a 9-11 mark, good for second place in their division. Brittain nets first collegiate double-double Last weekend marked a breakthrough performance for former Iroquois Ridge High School basketball star Scott Brittain. The Boston University freshman forward accomplished NCAA career highs in both points (13) and rebounds (10) in the Terriers' 80-75 double-overtime loss Saturday to the University of Hartford, posting his first collegiate double-double. Brittain shot 4-for-7 from the floor, including a three-pointer, and pulled down three offensive rebounds. He has started all 13 games the Terriers have played, averaging 4.8 points and 4.9 rebounds in 24.4 minutes per game, and has contributed 11 steals this season. Boston University is 3-10 overall and 0-1 in the America East Conference, but the Terriers have been much more competitive than their record suggests. Four of BU's past five losses have come by five points or fewer, and three of the team's past four contests have gone to overtime. Brittain and BU were in action SPORTSBRIEFS again last night against the University of Maine. Dawson, Sting drop opener After a quick start in their National Lacrosse League regular-season opener, Dan Dawson and the Arizona Sting were held in check by the Colorado Mammoth Friday in Phoenix. Dawson scored 1:01 into the game and the Sting built an early 2-0 lead, but the defending champion Mammoth rallied for a 10-6 victory. Dawson finished the contest with two goals, an assist, 12 shots on goal and seven loose balls. The 6-foot-5 forward also had an apparent second-period goal disallowed because of an illegal stick infraction. The Sting's next game is scheduled for Saturday as Arizona visits the San Jose Stealth, the club that drafted Dawson's younger brother Paul in last year's entry draft. Paul is the Stealth's third-string goaltender this season and is not expected to play. Dodge player of the month Clarkson University captain Nick Dodge was named the College Sports Television/Hockey Commissioners' Association National Division I Player of the Month for December after leading the Golden Knights to their first perfect month in seven years. The 5-foot-10, 184-pound Oakville resident collected 11 points on five goals and six assists as Clarkson went 5-0 last month. Dodge, who was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in last year's NHL Entry Draft, also helped the Golden Knights kill 38 of 39 opposition power plays in December. Four teams of mostly undrafted 16- and 17-year-olds will play in two games today, with the North facing the East division at 6:30 p.m., followed by the South versus West at 8:30 p.m. It's the first time that Georgetown has hosted the Future Stars event and several hundred tickets at $9 each have already been sold. The NHL's Central Scouting Bureau, major junior clubs and several U.S. and Canadian post-secondary schools will have scouts in attendance. Metcalfe will play defence for Team West, allying with Oakville Blades defenceman Jordan Ogilvie and goaltender Kori Coelho. Metcalfe, whose father Bill was drafted by Kingston of the OHL and had a tryout with the WHA's Houston Aeros, hasn't decided on a career path as yet but definitely wants to keep playing competitively for as long as possible. He has also been working with Aurora Tigers' head coach and former Chicago Blackhawks player Jerome Dupont to improve his game. "Improving my confidence is my main goal right now," Metcalfe added. "The coaches in Georgetown www.oakvilleminorbaseball.com have helped me out a lot, just letting Email: omba@oakvilleminorbaseball.com me know not to hesitate with the puck and to try to slow things down when you need to." 905-847-5545 STAY TUNED FOR 2007 REGISTRATION DATES!
