www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday January 6, 2007 - 11 Police anticipate more arrests in stolen statue case By Dennis Smith SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Police anticipate more arrests soon following the theft of a Ukrainian hero's statue from a north Oakville park. Halton police charged one man after recovering the 170-lb. bronze statue head Tuesday at Burlington's Thomson Metals & Disposal. Now police say they have a lead on more suspects. "We have a pretty good handle on who's responsible and how this transpired," Det.-Sgt. Greg Sullivan said Friday. "We're pretty confident we know who was involved and what their roles were." The 15-ft. statue of Taras H. Shevchenko was stolen last month from a park named in honour of the Ukrainian hero and poet. Sullivan noted it would take sev- eral people to cut down and steal the huge bronze statue because it weighed hundreds of pounds. He said the statue theft is linked to break-ins at old cottages at the park, north of Dundas Street near Lions Valley Park. "There's probably someone with a little local knowledge who knew this was a little out of the way and there would be more time to cut it (the statue) up and take it down." Copper and brass fittings were also stolen from the park's cottages. Sullivan said there have been many thefts of steel, copper and metal products in Halton. The materials are sold to metal dealers, with some sent to Europe or China. The stolen statue head was saved as a conversation piece. When Gary Thomson read about the stolen statue, he called police. In an ironic twist, a suspect inad- vertently visited the dealer when investigators were there. Police subsequently arrested and charged a 36year-old Oakville man with possession of stolen property over $5,000. Sullivan said other scrap dealers and Chinese authorities will be alerted about the missing statue parts. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 905-825-4747 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. -- with files from AngelaBlackburn THE THE DECORATING CLASS presented by Interior Designer, Susan Madigan Carr Gifts & Home Where: Finials 67 Bronte Rd., Oakville 905-825-1202 When: Wed., Jan 17-Feb. 7 (7pm-9pm) Thurs., Feb. 1-Feb. 22 (7pm-9pm) Cost: 4 Week Session $135 (i The Decorating Class will inspire you to discover what is current and popular in home decorating and what style suits you, your lifestyle and your family.
