Veronica Payne and Det. Constable Joe Barr by Gary Thomson of Burlington-based Thomson Metals & Disposal this week. Thomson realized, after reading a newspaper report about the theft, the "conversation piece" he'd recently bought was the head of the stolen statue and called police. As officers retrieved the head and interviewed Thomson and his employees, luck would have it the same men who had sold Thomson the head in mid-December just happened to show up to do more business. It led to charges against an Oakville man late Tuesday. A second man was interviewed but released by police. While police now have the statue's head, they've launched a new investigation in search of the remainder of the statue's 15-ft. frame. "We remain cautiously optimistic that we will recover some of the other pieces. That's the priority right now," said police spokesper BARRIE ERSKINE / OAKVILLE BEAVER HELPED OUT: A 17-year-old Oakville high school student was rushed to Hamilton General Hospital yesterday at approximately 4:30 p.m. after the Honda Civic he was driving tangled with a light post on North Service Road near Dorval Drive. The Grade 11 student was conscious at the time, said Halton Regional Police Acting Sgt. Nick McConnell, who was on scene. It took Oakville firefighters, police and Halton EMS nearly an hour to get the youth out of the car, after removing the doors, windshield and cutting off the roof. Nearly 50 people watched as the youth was removed and put on a stretcher. As of press time yesterday, police were continuing to investigate the accident and a traffic reconstruction team was at work on the scene. See Statue's page 3 End insurance confusion.
