Proof to Store Manager. Happy New Year! Mother Nature made Glen Eden Ski and Snowboard Centre miss the first week of the traditionally busy Christmas holidays, creating a "substantial" financial loss for the operation. The lack of snow and cold temperatures meant the centre was closed to skiers and snowboarders all last week and its children's Christmas camp was cancelled. At holiday press time Friday afternoon, another expected opening date hadn't been set. "Missing this week has impacted things," said executive manager Bob Harris. "A chunk of our business is built around the Christmas holidays." While he wasn't able to name a specific dollar amount, Harris said the financial impact of losing the week was substantial. He noted the hill hasn't missed a Christmas since the 1982-1983 season, when it didn't open for business until around mid-January. However, he pointed out the snowmaking equipment back then was rather primitive. For now, the snow that's been made this season is sitting is stockpiles around Glen Eden's property. While more snowmaking was scheduled to take place last Thursday evening, that didn't happen. Harris explained the forecast said the temperature would drop to 5 C that night, but it never did. He noted the cloudy skies around Milton lately haven't helped either, since it retains moisture and warmth. "We're not getting the cold temperatures we'd like to get," he said. The snow delay also meant that as of Friday, the 350-plus Glen Eden employees hadn't been working, but are on-call for whenever the mercury drops. Whenever it does, Harris said they want it to stay good and cold for at least 48 hours to get things up and running. "If we could even grab some nights at 5 C, we could start to put things together," Harris said.
