Shown here are Princess Winnifred (Natalie Zazulyk) on the mattress, Prince Dauntless (Carson Gale) and Queen Appravain (played by Angie Maxwell and Lize Van der Bijl). The musical runs at 7:30 p.m. at the school from Wednesday to Friday. Tickets are on sale now at the school lobby ticket booth Monday to Friday daily until 3 p.m. and will be on sale an hour before show time unless sold out. dren are more willing to try, have a better attitude. Particularly the kids coming out of our camp, they can really tell the difference with them now," Anderson said. One week prior to Camp Sylvester volunteers go to the school with learning resources. They use them with the children so teachers can see the learning tools in action. Afternoons are spent without children so teachers can learn to use the tools. Anderson said most teachers there are unqualified and when confronted with a behavioural problem, their strategy is to yell, yell louder and then hit. Anderson makes it clear to them that is not how she or her volunteers operate. They show the teachers how to get the children to cooperate and how they deal with behavioral issues. "It's been three years now, and we've had our best summer ever, because now we've established a relationship," Anderson said about the teachers, admitting it was easier to establish a relationship with the children. The Women's Mentoring program is held two nights a week during the time the camp is running, for the women who have children or grandchildren at the camp. They participate in needlepoint, knitting and beadwork, but it is the company that attracts them. "A lot of that is just an excuse for them to get together to talk. To have support from other women. A lot of them have led very difficult lives, there's been a lot of abuse," said Anderson. The meetings used to be held in a bar because it was the only location there was, but a roof was built over the courtyard at Anderson's home where the day camp runs. "We finally found a safe place," she said. The project is based out of Chartwell Baptist Church, but Anderson said anyone can help. "Everyone has different motivations for why they might want to take part. So we respect anyone's motivation. If they have a desire to give, we want to honor that," she said. Anderson accepts a maximum of eight volunteers at a time to help in the St. Lucia Learning Project because of the limited space for them. Volunteers are also expected to pay for their own expenses and stay a minimum of two weeks, so the children have time to build a relationship. Those who sponsor a child will receive letters and updates on how the child is doing. Sponsoring a child costs $115, which will go to the camper's meal, learning supplies, field trips and a back-to-school kit. Volunteer and sponsorship information can be found at www.stlucialearningproject.co m or info@thestlucialearningproject.com. Last year's fundraising concert raised $2,000. Anderson has not set a goal for this year. "Whatever this raises, just means it's more what we can do," she said. This year's concert is entitled O Come all Ye Cheerful and will feature musical talents from the Canadian Opera Company, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Cats. Tickets cost $25 and are available at the door of Chartwell Baptist Church at 228 Chartwell Rd. Tickets can also be purchased at the church office or by calling 905829-0396.
